Long time Pirate football assistant and Ventura College alumnus Jake Colman '17 has been named as the head coach for the newly created VC Pirate Women's Flag Football team. Colman will direct the new program as it enters off-season workouts in the fall of 2025. This spring, Southern California community colleges and 4-year universities with women's flag football programs are participating in the inaugural So Cal College Flag Football League. VC plans on joining the league in Spring 2026 under the direction of Colman.
"I'm truly honored and excited to become the first flag football coach for Ventura College," said Colman. "This opportunity is a privilege and I'm incredibly excited to build something special for our female student-athletes.
"Together, we will create a strong foundation for success, empowerment, and growth on and off the field. I can't wait to see the incredible athletes and leaders we will cultivate."
Colman completed his sixth season as the Pirates' offensive line coach and his third as VC's Offensive Coordinator for the VC football team in 2024. In the spring, Colman has been assistant coach for the VC men's tennis team since 2022, playing a major role with the Pirates' 3C2A state championship run during the 2024 season.
The Pirate football offense under Colman has consistently placed within the Top-10 within the National Division of the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) in most statistical categories. Ventura's 2023 offense was the No. 3-ranked offense in efficiency in the state of California. That season Colman coordinated one of the most effective rushing efforts in 3C2A history with a pair of running-backs surpassing the 1,000-yard mark in the same season. This effort was a first for Ventura College history and the first such season for two running-backs in California in over a decade.
Colman is a Ventura native and attended Buena High School. He earned three varsity letters with the Bulldogs and matriculated to Ventura College. Colman was an All-SCFA, All-State and All-American for the Pirates on the offensive line, helping VC to a pair of Northern Conference championships. He accepted a full scholarship to San Jose State University where he played for two seasons with the Spartans of the Mountain West Conference.
Despite his success on the gridiron, Colman's proudest achievements come as a husband and father. He and his wife Michelle have a son, Easton, and a daughter, Lainey.
