VC sophomore Alexa Coubal saved her best for last Friday, posting the program's first-ever 30-20 double-double in Ventura's 90-27 victory over Oxnard in the season finale. The Thousand Oaks product scored 33 points on 16-18 shooting from the floor with 22 rebounds in the Pirate win. Sam McKenzie closed her VC career with 22 points and 10 assists while Danielle Salazar scored 14 points with 13 boards. Milan Garcia also netted 14 points for the Pirates.
The opening minutes of the game were close, with the Condors making a three to pull to within 9-8 midway through the first period. The Pirates took full control at that point with a 21-2 run that would span from the first quarter into the second. McKenzie assisted a Coubal bucket to start the run and Aiyana Gonzalez followed with a made jumper. McKenzie scored on a fast break, Coubal scored inside and Garcia hit from range to extend the lead to 20-8 at the end of the stanza.
McKenzie cashed in a dime from Charnelle Nichols to open the second before Nichols hit one free throw and McKenzie sank two. Coubal then scored on back-to-back possessions for a 30-10 VC lead with 5:01 remaining in the first half. McKenzie assisted a Gonzalez field goal, Salazar hit a three and Coubal scored two as Ventura led 37-14 at halftime.
it was more of the same for VC in the third quarter as the Pirates completely overmatched the Condors. Coubal went 4-5 from the floor in the period and Salazar nailed two shots from beyond the arc. Garcia's three in the final minute gave Ventura a 60-22 lead headed to the final 10 minutes of play.
Garcia made a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around two field goals from Coubal as the Pirates continued the rout. Coubal was a perfect 6-6 in the quarter for 12 points and McKenzie hit two three's en route to eight points in the period.
Garcia and Salazar each handed out four assists and McKenzie blocked a pair of shots. Salazar also recorded three steals in the victory.
The victory ends the Pirates season on a high note. VC posted a 10-14 overall record, 5-7 in Western State Conference games.
