
The VC volleyball team continued to find its groove Friday night with a 27-25, 17-25, 25-19, 26-24 triumph over state No. 21 College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. Five different Pirates totaled six or more kills in the match with Callie Cahill leading the way with 12 winners. Makena Schaumloeffel hit five aces with 10 digs and six kills and Shai Daniels totaled nine winners with 13 digs. Daphne Raymond and Talia Behrens each had eight kills in the victory for Ventura (6-5).
Before a sizable and boisterous crowd at the Cougar Cage, the teams battled in a very close opening set. COC led 23-21 before the Pirates scored three straight winners to take a 24-23 lead. The Cougars survived two set points before VC tallied the final two winners for a 27-25 set win.
Canyons came back strong, however, and easily won the second set 25-17 to even the match.
The Pirates reestablished control with a 25-19 win in the third set, but found themselves trailing 18-12 in the fourth. VC rallied to tie the score at 21 later in the set, and clinched the triumph with a 26-24 set win.
Bryce Swain had a strong defensive performance with 11 digs while Skylar Rutherford recorded eight digs and handed out 25 assists. Natalie Bair passed 16 assists in the game and Taylor Lane had four blocks with four kills.
The Pirates next open Western State Conference play on Wednesday Oct. 2 at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.
