The VC volleyball team had a solid outing on Wednesday, defeating Bakersfield in four sets, 25-12, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13. Makena Schaumloeffel had an excellent game with a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs. She achieved a .400 hitting percentage and also recorded three aces to lead the Pirates (5-5). Skylar Rutherford also posted a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs while Callie Cahill had 10 winners at the net.
After falling behind 5-3 early, the Pirates righted the ship, tying the score at 7-7 on a huge kill by Talia Behrens. Another Behrens winner and an ace from Sadie Lishman extended the lead to 11-7 and Rutherford's winner made it eight straight points for Ventura, 14-7. Cahill served an ace and Behrens had another kill for a 19-10 advantage before VC closed the set with winners from Shai Daniels and Cahill.
VC won three straight rallies for a 9-6 advantage in the second set to prompt a Renegade timeout before Schaumloeffel and Taylor Lane had kills for a 12-8 margin. BC stayed close, however, as Lishman served up another ace and Cahill recorded a winner for an 18-14 advantage. Daniels made it 22-15 and Schaumloeffel finished off the 25-20 set win.
Bakersfield went ahead early in the third set, 5-2, but a kill by Schaumloeffel and an ace by Daniels knotted the count at 8-8. The Renegades then raced out to a 24-18 advantage when three straight winners by the Pirates prompted a BC timeout. The Renegades stopped the bleeding to get on the board with a 25-21 set win.
Ventura gained the upper hand early in the fourth, leading 5-3 before winners by Cahill and Lane extended the advantage to 9-5. Daphne Raymond's kills made it 13-7 for VC and a pair of kills by Schaumloeffel put the Pirates fiemly in control, 20-11. Lishman's ace and Behrens' kill clinched the victory for Ventura.

Lishman led the defense with 16 digs while hitting three service aces. Daniels recorded 15 digs and seven kills and Lane had nine winners in the match. Behrens tallied eight kills and four blocks. Natalie Bair handed out 22 assists for Ventura.
The Pirates next travel to College of the Canyons on Friday Sept. 28 for a 6:00 pm match.
