
The VC women's tennis team trailed visiting Canyons 2-1 and 3-2 Thursday before winning the final four singles matches to defeat the Cougars, 6-3. Dulce Contreras clinched the victory for the Pirates in No. 5 singles while Lola Tennison and Chandra Padua were double-winners for VC.
The Pirates fell behind 2-1 after doubles play with Tennison and Padua earning the lone victory in No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
Kira Branson evened the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win in No. 3 singles before Fernanda Gonzales was forced to retire on Court 6 trailing 6-2, 4-2. Trailing 3-2, Ventura caught fire, winning the final four matches. Padua claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win on Court 4 before Tennison prevailed in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Contreras then clinched the Pirate triumph with a 6-4, 6-3 win in No. 5 singles and Nicole Iannacone completed the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 1.
Ventura (9-7, 8-5) clinched at least a third-place tie in the Western State Conference with the win. They will conclude the regular season on Monday Mar. 31 with a match at Santa Barbara.
