
The Ventura College women's tennis team took the entire match, but finally vanquished Los Angeles Mission 5-4 Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. Lola Tennison and Chandra Padua each were double winners for the Pirates while Fernanda Gonzales clinched the victory with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 6 singles.
The Pirates took the early lead in doubles play when Tennison and Padua recorded an 8-1 triumph in the No. 2 match. VC dropped the Nos. 3 and 1 doubles contests, respectively, by identical 8-3 scores to trail 2-1 heading to singles play.
Kira Branson evened the match with a love and love victory in No. 3 singles before Padua put VC ahead winning on Court 4, 6-0, 6-1. Tennison added to the Pirate advantage with a 4-6, 6-1,6-1 win in No. 2 singles before the Eagles halved their deficit with a win on Court 5. Nicole Iannacone barely missed clinching the match for VC with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) setback in No. 1 singles before Gonzales came from behind to win Court 6, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, giving Ventura the win.
The Pirates (6-6, 5-4) next host Antelope Valley on Thursday Mar. 20 at 2:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.
