Pirate freshman Baylany Magana pitched another gem Thursday, scattering three hits over seven innings while striking out five as Ventura defeated Moorpark 3-0 at the VC Softball Complex. Bryanne Magana had two hits, including an RBI double, and Madison Shay knocked in two runs as VC remained in a tie for first place in the Western State Conference North Division standings.
Ventura took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Aubrey Aguirre led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Savanna Higgins, who stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Br. Magana then hit a two-out RBI double to provide the Pirates with the early edge.
In the third inning, VC added two more runs. Ba. Magana and Dakota Moore each reached base on an error, ending up on second and third with one out. Shay then singled to center field to bring home both runners.
The was more than enough for Ba. Magana as she did not allow more than one base runner in any inning, facing 25 batters overall, four over the minimum.
Ventura next hosts Southwestern on Friday Mar. 21 for a double-header with games beginning at 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
