
The VC men's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 decision to NCAA Division III Cal Tech Saturday at the VC Tennis Center. Rafael Matias and Yanis Guerrout were double-winners for the Pirates. Matias and Guerrout won together in No. 2 doubles while also earning points in Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectfully. Max Beaudry partnered with Manolo Vanbesien to win in No. 3 doubles.
The Pirates started the day winning two of three doubles contests. Matias and Guerrout claimed the No. 2 match 6-2 while Beaudry and Vanbesien won at No. 3, 6-3. Yusen Sato and Haru Nakayama narrowly missed the sweep for VC, falling in No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2).
Guerrout won his No. 3 singles match leading 2-0 when his opponent retired. Matias had a relatively easy time in No. 1 singles, claiming a love and three triumph. Nakayama battled for the team match in No. 4 singles, winning the first set 7-5 before falling in the second and in the supertiebreaker.
Ventura returns to Western State Conference play on Tuesday Mar. 4 hosting Glendale at 2:00 pm.
