
The Pirates' women's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout win over visiting Cerritos Tuesday, stretching their unbeaten streak to five games, and moving their winning streak to three games. Lex Sahagian scored a first half goal and Melanie Torres shut the door on the Falcons with a second-half score in the triumph. Sibella Donnelly had a strong game in goal for Ventura, ranked No. 16 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national rankings.
The game was physical from the start, indicated by a pair of yellow cards issues in the 27th minute. The Pirates (4-1-3) were able to take the upper hand in the 34th minute when Sahagian netted her fifth goal of the year from an assist by Daisy Vaca.
Donnelly had a strong first half, controlling her 18-yard box against the Falcons, aided by Desire Lopez in right back and Vaca at left back.
Ventura closed out any chance for Cerritos in the 68th minute when Torres finished an assist from Valeria Lopez.
Despite a strong effort from the Falcons down the stretch, VC was able to hold on for the 2-0 decision, their third straight win by the same score.
D. Lopez, Vaca and V. Lopez were all singled out for their strong play in the game.
The Pirates ended the game with 12 total shots, eight on goal, while Cerritos recorded three shots with one on target.
VC next travels to Bakersfield on Friday Sept. 20 for a 1:30 pm game against the Renegades.
