
Lex Sahagian netted a goal in the 12th minute Tuesday night and Yaraby Herrera scored in the 47th to propel the VC women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Rio Hondo at the Sportsplex. Goalkeeper Janessah Gonzales had a pair of saves in recording the shutout while Daisy Vaca and Emily Ramirez had solid games in the midfield disrupting the Roadrunner attack.
The Pirates began the game aggressively attacking the Rio Hondo defense with Jessica Aguilar taking a shot on goal in the first three minutes of play. In the 12th minute, Sahagian took a right-to-left cross from Ramirez, settled it in the box and scored for VC's 1-0 advantage.
Ventura continued the offensive throughout the first half, including a strong cross from Aguilar from left of the goal that did not find a redirect from the Pirates.
Meanwhile, the VC defensive combination of Desire Lopez, Leslie Torres and Tanaya Moreno played well in front of Gonzales as the Pirates took a the 1-0 margin into halftime.
Herrera scored three minutes into the second half with a strong run down the middle of the field. She took a pass from Vaca at midfield, shook a Roadrunner defender 45 yards from the goal before attacking and slotting a shot past the keeper just inside the far post.
The Pirates held on down the stretch to record the 2-0 decision.
VC had a solid offensive night with a season-high 13 shots with six on goal. Meanwhile, Rio Hondo managed four shots with two on target.
Next up, Ventura travels to El Camino on Friday Sept. 13 before hosting Cerritos on Tuesday Sept. 17.
