Buoyed by a pre-season No. 9 state-ranking, the VC women's water polo team had a strong opening weekend at the West Valley Invitational in Saratoga. The Pirates came away from the tournament with a 3-1 mark, including three convincing victories. Leading the way was sophomore attacker Kelsee Espitia. The Ventura High School product led VC in scoring with 15 goals and grabbed eight steals with four assists and four drawn exclusions. Offensively, she connected on nearly 57 percent of her shot attempts in the four games. For her efforts, Kelsee has been named this week's VC Pirate Student Athlete of the Week sponsored by M & M Sports.
