The Pirates' men's water polo team opened their Western State Conference schedule with a victory last week at Santa Monica College, 19-12. Leading the charge for VC was freshman utility player Owen Patterson, who had 10 goals in the game. The Strathmore (Calif.) High School product was dominant, finding the inside of the cage three times each in the first, third and fourth quarters of play. Patterson also added four steals defensively and three drawn exclusions to help lead Ventura to the triumph. On the season, he leads the team in scoring, steals and drawn exclusions. For his efforts, Owen is this week's VC Pirate Student Athlete of the Week sponsored by M & M Sports.
