WOMEN'S SOCCER In an impressive opening night performance, the No. 16-ranked Pirate women's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over No. 19 San Francisco Thursday night at the VC Sportsplex concluding the first day of the Nike Soccer Community College Classic. Sophomore midfielder AJ Tewes and transfer sophomore Macey Herrera netted goals in the first half to put the Pirates (1-0-0) ahead while freshman goal keeper Hailee Powell turned back a furious Ram charge in the second half to preserve the victory.
Tewes scored the season's first goal with a header off of Delanie Gavid's cross in the 10th minute and Herrera made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute with an 18-yard rocket that deflected off of a defender's back. After San Francisco halved the VC advantage seven minutes into the second half, Powell turned back shot after shot to solidify the final result.
The Pirates will wrap up their 18-team home tournament on Saturday Aug. 31 with a contest against No. 4 Sierra College, a state finalist from a year ago. Kickoff is slated for 3:15 pm at the Sportsplex.
