The VC women's soccer team gave up a late goal on Tuesday, falling to visiting Citrus 1-0 at the Sportsplex. The Owls netted the score in the 74th minute after the Pirate defense failed to clear a ball inside the six-yard box. Although Ventura (2-4-2) had more chances down the stretch, they could not find the equalizer in the setback.
Both teams had chances in the opening 45 minutes, but neither was able to find the inside of the net.
In the second half, the action picked up as there were many sequences with the action heading up and down the field of play.
Sasha Franco turned in a solid game in the midfield for the Pirates, as did Elisa Merlos and Maggie Mordecai, but the effort was not enough for Ventura.
VC totaled eight shots in the game, four on goal, while Citrus totaled four shots, with three on frame. VC goalkeeper Isa Garcia recorded a pair of saves.
The Pirates next travel to Bakersfield on Friday Sept. 24 for their final non-conference tune-up before beginning Western State Conference North Division play on Tuesday Sept. 27.
