The Pirates' women's tennis team captured an exciting 5-4 victory to open the 2024 season Friday at Fullerton. Chrystelle Aguiar won her No. 5 singles match to clinch the triumph for Ventura (1-0). Alexis Schmidt and Bella Moga each earned a pair of points with wins in their doubles and singles matches, respectively.
Ventura took an early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Nicole Iannacone and Schmidt swept their No. 1 doubles contest, 8-0 while Bella DeRosa and Moga won at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
In singles, Schmidt made easy work of her opponent in the No. 1 slot, four and love and Moga won in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Aguiar clinched the match in No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. VC also came close in No. 4 singles where DeRosa fell in a super tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-5 (10-5) and Berllyn Paz dropped a narrow 7-5, 6-4 decision at No. 6 singles.
The Pirates are slated to begin Western State Conference play on Tuesday Feb. 6 at Santa Monica, weather permitting.
