Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts won their doubles quarterfinal Friday at the Western State Conference Championships while Lieb also posted a pair of love, love wins in the singles draw to move to the quarterfinals Friday at the VC Tennis Center. Alexis Schmidt and Elizabeth Nguyen rebounded from a narrow loss in the doubles Round of 16 to win their match in the backdraw to qualify for state in late April at The Ojai.
Lieb and Elaerts, the No. 3-seed in the bracket, prevailed in their quarterfinal match 8-3 over the No. 5 team from Bakersfield to move to Saturday's quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Nguyen dropped a 9-7 decision in their match against Antelope Valley suspended on Thursday before they won their backdraw match over a pair from Bakersfield 8-4.
In singles play, Lieb was dominant with a pair of love, love victories over opponents from Canyons and Bakersfield, respectively, to move into the quarterfinal round. Elaerts came from behind in he Round of 32 with a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win over a player from Glendale before she narrowly dropped another three-set marathon, 3-6, 7-6, 10-5. Belladora Moga defeated an opponent from LA Mission 6-4, 6-4, before falling in the Round of 16, 6-0, 6-2, to the draw's top-seed from Santa Monica.
On Saturday April 1, Lieb plays in the singles quarterfinals beginning at 10:00 AM at the VC Tennis Center with the semifinals scheduled for 11:00 am. Elaerts and Moga will play in the singles backdraw with a chance to qualify for state at 10:00 am, also. Lieb and Elaerts will play in the doubles semifinals at 1:00 pm. The women's singles and doubles championships are slated for Tuesday April 4.
