VC freshmen Talia Lieb and Nell Elaerts are still alive in the CCCAA State Doubles Championships at The Ojai Tournament. The Pirates' No. 1 duo put together a pair of wins, including an upset of Northern California's No. 2-seeded team to advance to the state quarterfinals to be played Saturday at the Ojai Athletic Club.
Lieb and Elaerts, the No. 5-seed from Southern California, defeated the NorCal No. 11 team from West Valley in their first match of the day, 6-1, 6-1. They followed with an upset victory over the No. 2-seed from NorCal's Sierra College 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Lieb won her first singles match of the day, 6-2, 6-3 against the NorCal No. 9-seed from American River. The SoCal No. 5-seed then dropped a three-set thriller to the NorCal No. 3-seeded player from City College of San Francisco, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Elaerts also played in the singles draw Friday morning, dropping her round of 32 match 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 to the SoCal No. 7-seed from Glendale.
Lieb and Elaerts are slated to play the No. 2-seed from SoCal's LA Mission College at 3:00 pm Saturday at the Ojai Athletic Club.
