An exciting week with Ventura College Athletics warrants our first ever Co-VC Pirate Student Athletes of the Week! Sharing the award are pitcher Travis Weston of the WSC Champion baseball team and the duo of Brooklyn Wallet and Faith Mackie of the WSC champion beach volleyball team.
The baseball team won its final two Western State Conference North Division games this week to clinch the program's first conference title in 13 years. Weston, a freshman left-hander from Moorpark High School, pitched seven innings on Tuesday, giving up three runs, two earned, while striking out five to earn the victory in VC's 8-3 win at Allan Hancock College. Then on Thursday, with the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth inning, Travis came on in relief with two outs to get the conference-clinching strikeout in Ventura's 3-1 win over the Bulldogs at Pirate Park.
Meanwhile, in beach volleyball, VC's No. 4 pairs team of Wallet and Mackie were making an improbable run through the WSC pairs tournament. The no. 23-seeded team, Wallet, a freshman from Buena High School, and Mackie, a freshman graduate of Foothill Tech, upset the Nos. 10 and 7 seeds from Bakersfield and Victor Valley, respectively, on Wednesday, before pulling off a pair of three-set thrillers against teammates Shantalle Ruiz and Kasie Spencer in the quarterfinals, and Raphaella Rosales and Vanessa Ihrke in the semifinals. The duo lost the WSC championship in three sets once again, falling just four points shy of a conference title.
Travis, Brooklyn and Faith have all earned recognition a this week's VC Pirate Student Athlete of the Week.
