
VC's men's and women's track and field teams had a strong day Friday at the Western State Conference Prelims at Antelope Valley College. Brianna Torres captured gold in the women's 10k final and Trevor McCarthy won the men's javelin final to lead Ventura in the competition. Numerous other Pirates turned in strong performances to qualify for the WSC Finals coming up April 26.
Torres (Oxnard) emerged victorious in the grueling 10k race, breaking the tape in 40:53.18 to take the gold by a five second margin. Sophia Godina (Rio Mesa) finished fourth in the 10k race and qualified for the conference finals in the 800m and 1500m events.
Brooke Pyle (Foothill Tech) showcased her versatility by placing fifth in the long jump final and securing spots for next week in the 100m and 200m races. She is also scheduled to compete with the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Cassandra O'Reilly (Rio Mesa) came in fifth in the discus final and sixth in the javelin while qualifying for next week's 100m hurdles. Meanwhile, Savannah Sprinkle (Buena) placed sixth in the high jump and eighth in the long jump. She also qualified for the 100m finals and will contribute to the 4x100m relay.
Charys Pyle (Foothill Tech) secured spots in the finals for both the 100m and 400m hurdles.
Stephanie Alanis (Channel Islands) scored with a seventh place finish in the discus and an eighth place throw in the javelin.
Trevor McCarthy (St. Bonaventure) emerged as the javelin champion with a throw of 175'5", nearly 13' past second place. Additionally, he secured spots in the finals for both the 100m and 200m races and will also compete in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Thomas Dore (Oxnard) qualified for the finals in the 100m and will join McCarthy in the 4x100m relay.
In the middle-distance events, Erick Tienda (Rio Mesa), Mason Jekogian (Ventura), and Adrian Valdez (Oxnard) all secured spots in the finals for the 800m and 1500m races. Tienda's also won bronze in the 10,000m run.
In the field, Liam Genkel (Ventura) finished sixth in the high jump.
The Pirates will travel to Bakersfield on Friday April 26 for the WSC Finals.
