The Ventura College golf team placed fourth overall in the 36-hole Western State Conference Championships Monday at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills. The Pirates shot 389 in the morning round to finish fourth, and turned in a382 in the afternoon, also finishing in the middle of the pack. The 771 total for the day also placed VC in fourth place, qualifying them for the Southern California Regionals next week. AJ Ryland and Logan Gonzalez led Ventura earning All-WSC honors.
Gonzalez paced a balanced VC effort in the morning round with a 2-over par 74 to tie for fifth overall. Ian Chapital and Daniel Darwin turned in 5-over 77's, tying for 13th individually, and Ryland came in with a 79. Hunter McCoy shot an 82 and Brandon Flores carded an 83 as the Pirates team score of 389 finished behind Canyons (363), Santa Barbara (379) and tied with Bakersfield (389), who won the tiebreaker.
In the afternoon, Ryland turned things on with a 1-under 71 to finish tied for fourth. Gonzalez tied for 13th with a 4-over 76 while Chapital and Darwin were the models of consistency, each carding another 77.McCoy scored an 81 in the afternoon and Flores shot an 88. Ventura was fourth as a team, once again, with Canyons (361) winning for the eighth time in 11 rounds this season. Bakersfield came in second (371) and Santa Barbara came in two shots ahead of the Pirates at 380.
CoC claimed the day with a 724 total while Santa Barbara (759) was second and Bakersfield (760) was third.
On the season, Ryland tied for sixth overall of all individuals in the WSC and Gonzalez was ninth, earning each All-WSC honors.
Although VC finished sixth in the conference standings for the season, their fourth-place finish on Monday earned them a spot in next week's 3C2A Southern California Regionals at Rio Bravo Country Club in Bakersfield.
