The Ventura College Athletic Department would like to congratulate our Athletes of the Year for 2015-16, Aubri Smith of the women's basketball team and Hironori Koyanagi of the men's tennis team.
Smith became just the sixth women's basketball player in school history to earn back-to-back first-team all-state selections. She was twice a first-team All-Western State Conference selection, including the 2015 WSC MVP award winner, and led the conference champions in scoring, assists and steals, and was second on the team in rebounding. Her 340 career assists is third all-time in school history. She led VC to a combined 52-11 record over two years, including a perfect 24-0 WSC mark.
Koyanagi made a case as one of, if not the best men's tennis player ever to play at Ventura College. Although he came in second in the 2016 CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai Tournament, the loss cannot diminish all that he accomplished over his career, including two Western State Conference singles titles and a pair of doubles titles. He had an undefeated freshman year where he marched to the state championship without dropping a set, and he advanced to the state finals again as a sophomore. Hiro completed his career with a 46-2 singles record and a 37-4 doubles mark.
