Luis Cruz saved his best for last. The freshman cross country runner finished as VC's top runner for the first time all season Friday at the Southern California Regionals, finishing the 4-mile course at Central Park in Valencia in 23:02, a full 1:45 faster than he ran the course on September 13 at the SoCal Preview Meet. Cruz finished 88th overall, and qualified for the state meet by being the 12th-best finisher not on a team advancing to Fresno. The freshman from Pacifica High School in Oxnard will run in the CCCAA State Championships on Saturday Nov. 23 and is this week's VC Pirate Student Athlete of the Week sponsored by Pacific Aire Heating and Cooling.
