The 2013-14 Ventura College Athletes of the Year have been announced. The Male Athlete of the Year is football quarterback Brad Odeman while the Female Co-Athletes of the Year are basketball guards Lisa Marie Sanchez and Cynthia Hernandez.
Sanchez was a first-team WBCA All-American and earned State Co-Player of the Year honors. She was the State Tournament MVP in leading the Pirates the program's state-record seventh State Championship. She re-wrote the Pirates' assist record books for single game, season and career. She has signed a scholarship with NCAA Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Hernandez was a second-team CCCWBCA All-State performer and was also a main cog in VC's state title run. She was the best 3-point shooter in the country, shattering the school record with 115 made 3-pointers (the old mark was 84) she also set a new standard in 3-point shooting accuracy, hitting at an incredible 46.7 percent. She will be attending Rutgers University of the Big 10 Conference on a full scholarship.
Meanwhile, Odeman rewrote the Pirate football record books this past season. He set marks for single game, single season total offense, passing yards, and touchdown passes. He threw 28 touchdowns in Ventura's 11-game season, while throwing for3,292 yards. (The old marks were 22 TD's and 2,134 yards, respectively.) He transferred on scholarship in January to San Diego State University.
