The Pirates' women's water polo team split another pair of games Saturday at Cypress College, finishing the 22nd Annual Battle at the Beach Tournament in 11th place following a 2-2 weekend. Ventura (14-10, 2-3) defeated Grossmont 13-8 in the morning match before narrowly falling to Cypress 11-9. Raylynn Lipsky paced VC on Saturday with six goals and five assists while Shayle Barrus turned in another solid day in the cage, turning back 21 shots with five steals.
Ventura 13, Grossmont 8
Ventura used a 5-0 second quarter to take control after trailing 5-4 at the end of the first period. Abby Coker scored both of her goals in the decisive period. Leanna Ramirez led the balanced VC offense with three goals and a pair of assists in the game while Lipsky netted two scores with three assists and three steals. Shaeleigh Russell recorded two goals with two assists, two steals and two drawn ejections and Drew Reyes also found the cage twice with two thefts and two drawn ejections. Lauren Mora and Chloe Golden also scored goals for the Pirates. Barrus totaled 11 saves and four steals in three quarters of play in the win.
Ventura 9, Cpyress 11
After a 6-6 tie at halftime, the Pirate offense went cold in the third quarter as the Chargers netted a pair of goals to take the lead in their home pool. Lipsky led with four goals, two assists and three steals and Ramirez scored three times. Reyes scored a goal with two helpers and two thefts and Russell also notched a score. Barrus had 10 saves and five steals in goal.
Ventura will close out its regular season Western State Conference slate on Wednesday Oct. 30 at Los Angeles Valley. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm in Valley Glen.
