The VC women's water polo team built a big first quarter lead, then held visiting Mt. San Antonio scoreless in the second period en route to a solid 14-7 victory to conclude the first day of the Ventura Tournament at the Ventura Aquatic Center Friday night. Playing under the lights, Cali Iadevaia led the Pirates (9-5, 0-1) with four goals and Shaeleigh Russell netted three scores with two assists and four steals.
Iadevaia scored three of the Pirates' first four goals, with Sierra Cameron also finding the inside of the cage. Raylynn Lipsky's score with 24 seconds made it 5-0 for Ventura before the Mounties netted a late goal for the 5-1 margin at the quarter break.
Goalie Shayle Barrus keyed the VC defense in the second quarter, shutting out Mt. SAC in the period. VC received goals from Russell, Iadevaia and Drew Reyes to make it an 8-1 game at halftime.
The Pirates were never threatened in the second half as Phoebe Murtishaw recorded six saves in goal to push Ventura to the 14-7 victory.
Reyes totaled two goals, and assist and four steals while Delanie Lavacude-Klenck handed out two assists with three thefts. Yaneli Calderon found the net once and had a pair of helpers and Cameron scored once with an assist and two steals. Chloe Golden had a pair of second half scores for the Pirates and Barrus totaled five saves with a steal in one half of play in the goal.
The Pirates continue play in the Ventura Tournament on Saturday Oct. 12 at the Ventura Aquatic Center. VC hosts El Camino at 1:25 pm before finishing up play against Golden West at 3:30 pm.
