It was anything but smooth sailing for the Pirates' women's water polo team Friday as the dropped a pair of matches at the Battle at the Beach hosted by Long Beach City College. VC (10-10, 3-2) fell to Riverside 20-8 in the opener before losing to Mt. San Antonio 15-9 in the nightcap.
Ventura 8, Riverside 20
The Pirates were down big after the first quarter and never recovered against the Tigers. Eight Pirates each scored a single goal as Christina Tellez, Brittany Remo, Raquel Rodriguez, Cecily Loya, Anjali Paramanandam, Danielle Pfeifer, Melissa Robles and Reginae Maturino all found the back of the net. Brittany McWaid handed out a pair of assists while Cheyanne Irigoyen and Andrea Velador recorded four and three steals, respectively. Miranda Campos turned back 12 Riverside shots.
Ventura 9, Mt. San Antonio 15
A tough second quarter doomed the Pirates as the Mounties outscored them 6-1 in the period for a 10-3 halftime advantage. Tellez scored three goals and had three saves while McWaid scored twoce with an assist and a steal. Remo, Paramanandam, Robles and Maturino also scored for VC in the match. Maturino added four steals and a pair of assists to the effort and Loya added three steals. Campos had four saves.
Ventura will complete action at the Battle at the Beach on Saturday Oct. 25, then travel to Pierce College for their Western State Conference finale on Wednesday Oct. 29. the close the regular season on Friday oct. 31 at the Pasadena Mini Tournament.
