
The VC women's water polo team put together three solid halves of play in two games Saturday, resulting in a 1-1 record on the final day of the Chaffey Tournament in Rancho Cucamonga. The Pirates (5-4) played with highly-ranked Riverside for a half before falling 15-7 to the Tigers, then easily defeated East Los Angeles 15-3 in the tournament finale.
Ventura 7, Riverside 15
The Pirates nearly matched the Tigers goal-for-goal in the first half of play. Lauren Wiksell scored with 21 seconds left in the second quarter to make the score 6-5 in favor of Riverside before the Tigers netted a goal with just four ticks left on the clock. They were able to ride the momentum past intermission, outscoring VC 4-0 in the third period. Ventura was outscored 4-2 in the final eight minutes for the 15-7 final result.
Wiksell led Ventura with three scores, two assists, a drawn ejection and a steal, while Raquel Rodriguez netted a pair of scores with two drawn ejections. Paige Treloar-Ballard had a goal with four drawn ejections and Cheyanne Irigoyen also scored for VC in the loss. Kalyn Pina and Danielle Pfeifer each handed out two assists. Miranda Campos had six saves and Anjali Paramanandam turned back four shots while splitting time in the cage.
Ventrua 15, East Los Angeles 3
The Pirates controlled this match from the onset, opening up a 9-0 advantage by halftime. Wiksell, Rodriguez, Irigoyen, Brittany Camp and Paramanandam all scored two goals in the Pirates' balanced offensive attack. Pina, Pfeifer, Treloar-Ballard, Reginae Maturino and Elizabeth Seacord also scored goals for Ventura. Campos had six saves in goal.
Ventura continues Western State Conference play on Wednesday Sept. 23, hosting Allan Hancock College at 2:15 at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
