The Ventura College women's water polo team got a fight from the Pirate Alumnae, but were able to outlast the more experienced team 13-8 Saturday at the Ventura Aquatic Center. Brittany McWaid led Ventura (5-5) with four goals in the match.
The alumnae came out on fire, taking a 4-2 advantage after the opening eight minutes of play. The current Pirates responded, however, tying the score at 6-6 by halftime. Ventura took advantage of their youthful energy in the second half, outscoring the alumnae 7-2 in the final 16 minutes of play in the 13-8 win.
McWaid had four goals and an assist while Cheyenne Irigoyen and Andrea Velador each netted three goals. Cecily Loya handed out a pair of assists and pulled in five steals. Melissa Robles had a pair of scores and Christina Tellez also netted a goal. Brittany Remo had eight saves in the cage for the Pirates.
Ventura will travel to Santa Monica on Wednesday Oct. 1 before hosting Los Angeles Valley on Wednesday Oct. 8.
