The Pirates' men's water polo team won a pair of games Saturday at the Ventura Aquatic Center, defeating Crafton Hills 21-4 before outlasting the VC Alumni 24-18. Ryan Reardon led the way with nine goals and three steals in the two games while Austin Brunk netted seven scores, three assists and six thefts. Daniel Mclean recorded 12 saves and nine blocks in the cage while Brandyn Robles had six goals and 12 assists for VC (4-2).
Ventura 21, Crafton Hills 4
Ventura overmatched the first-year program from the outset, taking a 10-0 lead after the opening period of play. VC led 14-1 at halftime and cruised to the easy win. Brunk had an outstanding all-around game with four goals, six steals, two drawn ejections and an assist. Reardon totaled four goals with a pair of steals and one helper while Robles totaled three goals and assisted seven other scores. Brandon Berce and Zach Ziegler each found the cage three times and Mclean recorded seven saves and four blocks.
Ventura 24, VC Alumni 18
The current Pirates pulled away from their alumni opponents for the victory. The young Pirates led 9-8 at halftime before recording the victory. Reardon had five scores while Brunk had three with a pair of assists. Robles netted three goals with five helpers and Ziegler also scored three times. Bence, Dru Coronado, Carlos Lugo and Gabriel Ibarra all recorded two goals each for the current Pirates. Mclean turned back five shots with five blocks.
VC will open Western State Conference play on Wednesday Oct. 2 at Citrus College in Glendora. Play is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
