The Pirates' men's water polo team had mixed results to close the Cuesta Tournament in San Luis Obispo Saturday. VC defeated Ohlone 12-6 in an early morning match before being outscored 11-3 in the second half in falling to Sierra 15-10. CJ Daland had six goals for Ventura (17-9, 3-1) and Kyle Goodrich netted five scores.
Ventura 12, Ohlone 6
Daland had four goals and an assist to lead the way for VC. Roger Escalante handed out three helpers and Kevin Smallwood had two assists. Andrew Escobar and Luis Galvez each had three saves in goal in the victory.
Ventura 10, Sierra 15
The Pirates ran out of gas in their fifth game of the weekend. VC held a 4-1 advantage after the first period and led 7-4 at halftime. The Wolverines outscored Ventura 11-3 in the final 16 minutes of play. Goodrich tallied four goals with an assist and Daland scored twice. Galvez had four saves and a steal in the cage.
The Pirates return to the pool on Friday Oct. 21 in Santa Monica with two matches in the Eduard "Tuna" Gorodetsky Mini Tournament before playing a pair at the Orange Coast Mini on Saturday Oct. 22.
