The Ventura College men's water polo team dropped a pair of contests to NCAA Division III foes on Friday afternoon at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. The Pirates fell to the host Kingsmen 19-5 in the first contest of the day before dropping a 15-6 decision to Occidental College in the second. CJ Daland had four goals in the two matches for Ventura (7-5) while Clint Howard had eight ejections drawn.
Ventura 5, Cal Lutheran 19
The Pirates took a brief 1-0 lead early, but were unable to keep up with the four-year school The Kingsmen led 5-1 at the end of the first quarter and 9-3 at halftime. Daland had a pair of scores and an assist for the Pirates while Howard recorded three ejections drawn with one assist. Coby Wiegman had a goal and an assist and Kyle Goodrich and Isaac Alvary also scored goals in the match. Luis Gavlez had five blocks in the cage.
Ventura 6, Occidental 15
VC dropped its second match of the day against a four-year school, 15-6 to the Tigers. Daland once again netted a pair of goals with a drawn ejection and a steal and Howard recorded five drawn ejections. Wiegman scored once with an assist and Kevin Smallwood had two steals. Roger Escalante, Mitch Caldwell, and Greg Berardinelli also scored for Ventura.
The Pirates will make their home debut on Saturday Sept. 24 against the VC Alumni. The match is set to begin at 9:30 am at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
