Three Spikers Earn Honors
December 04, 2013Three members of the Ventura College volleyball team have received All-Western State Conference honors for the 2013 season, as voted by the conference coaches. Opposite hitter Kirra Drury was named second-team All-WSC recently while setter Dana Cleavenger and libero/setter Jasimine Perez received honorable mention All-WSC honors. -
Spikers Claim Set in Loss
November 15, 2013It may have been the end of the season, but the Pirate volleyball team did not go down without a fight. They claimed another set against Western State Conference frontrunner Santa Barbara Friday night in their 12-25, 26-24, 10-25, 20-25 loss to the Vaqueros at the Athletic Event Center. Kirra Drury led the effort with 10 kills and Jasmine Perez recorded 16 digs. Meanwhile Dana Cleavenger handed out 30 assists to go along with 10 digs. -
VC Volleyball Falls at Moorpark
November 13, 2013In a spirited cross-county match-up the Ventura College volleyball team dropped a 3-set match to the Moorpark Raiders Wednesday night at Raider Pavilion. The Pirates fell by scores of 15-25, 16-25, and 21-25. Despite dropping the first two sets, VC led 18-11 in the third before a string of mistakes prevented them from climbing back into the match. Jasmine Perez led VC with 13 digs and Dana Cleavenger handed out 26 assists. -
VB Drops Match at Hancock
November 08, 2013The Pirate volleyball team fell 3-1 on the road to Allan Hancock College in another close match 22-25, 26-28, 25-20, 23-25 Friday night in Santa Maria. Dana Cleavenger had 46 assists and three service aces for VC while Sarah Veloz registered 14 kills, 17 digs, and an ace. Kirra Drury had 13 kills and 14 digs and Sydney Morris recorded 15 digs. -
Pirates Fight Against Pierce
November 06, 2013Demonstrating the grit and determination they have shown all season, the Ventura College volleyball team fought No. 13-ranked and Western State Conference co-leader Los Angeles Pierce Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center, dropping their match in four sets, 16-25, 14-25, 27-25, 16-25. Sarah Veloz led VC with seven kills and Makeda Pelle had five kills. Jasmine Perez recorded 19 digs while Dana Cleavenger handed out 22 assists for the Pirates in the match. -
Spikers Swept at Cuesta
November 01, 2013The Pirate volleyball team dropped a straight-set match to the Cuesta Cougars Friday in San Luis Obispo, 18-25, 13-25, 21-25. Dana Cleavenger had 23 assists for the Pirates while Jasmine Perez served five aces with 14 digs. Abigail Gallegos and Makeda Pelle recorded six and five kills, respectively. -
Volleyball Goes the Distance
October 30, 2013The Ventura College volleyball team went the distance Wednesday night against Los Anegels Mission College at the Athletic Event center. Unfortunately, the Eagles came out on top, as VC dropped the five-set marathon, 21-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-20, 12-15. Jasmine Perez had five aces and 20 digs for the Pirates while Dana Cleavenger handed out 46 assists. -
VC Breaks Through at West LA
October 25, 2013A back and forth start turned into an excellent night when the Ventura College volleyball team defeated West Los Angeles on their own turf in four sets, 25-22, 17-25, 25-15, 25-6. Sydney Morris, Kirra Drury and Makeda Pelle each put away eight kills and Morris led the team with 13 digs. Setter Dana Cleavenger handed out 32 assists in the Pirate victory. -
Volleyball Defeated at SBCC
October 23, 2013The Pirate volleyball team salvaged a set in their 3-1 loss at No. 12 Santa Barbara City College Wednesday night. VC dropped the first set 25-13 before rebounding to take the second 25-23. The Vaqueros took the final two sets, 25-11 and 25-10. Kirra Drury led Ventura with 11 kills and Sarah Veloz had 18 digs. Dana Cleavenger handed out 25 assists in the match. -
VC Spikers Fall to Raiders
October 18, 2013The Ventura College volleyball team dropped a 3-set match to cross-county rival Moorpark College Friday night at the Athletic Event Center, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17. Makeda Pelle had seven kills in the match for VC (1-14, 0-5) and Sydney Morris had 13 digs. Gemma Stoll scored five blocks and Dana Cleavenger dished out 24 assists in the match. -
Pirates Lose a Heartbreaker
October 16, 2013Not without the effort, the VC volleyball team came up three points short in the third set of their 5-set loss to Allan Hancock College Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Leading 2-0 in sets, and up 20-19 in the third, the Pirates could not find a way to get the next five points, ultimately losing the set 25-23. Finally, VC lost the match 20-25, 13-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-13. Sydney Morris had 25 kills and Dana Cleavenger posted 66 assists to lead the Pirates. -
Brahmas Top VC Volleyball
October 11, 2013The VC volleyball team lost in three sets at defending state champion Los Angeles Pierce College Friday night, 25-14, 25-21, 25-10. Sydney Morris led the Pirate offense with four kills and Sarah Veloz had nine digs. The Pirates (1-12, 0-3) will look for their first Western State Conference victory of the season Wednesday at home against Allan Hancock College. The match will begin at 7:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center. -
Ventura VB Falls to Cuesta
October 09, 2013In the third set, with the outcome of the match a foregone conclusion, there was a point in which every Pirate on the floor hit dove at one time or another to reach a ball. Despite the score, the VC volleyball team continued to play hard, eventually falling to Cuesta College in three sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-12, Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Abigail Gallegos recorded four kills for the Pirates while Jasmine Perez had 14 digs and two aces. Dana Cleavenger had 21 assists and a pair of blocks for VC (1-11, 0-2). -
Volleyball So Close at Mission
October 04, 2013Finally through a stretch of facing seven ranked teams in its first 10 matches, the Ventura College volleyball team came so close to a breakthrough victory at Los Angeles Mission College Friday in the Western State Conference opener for both teams. VC lost the match 3-1, but were only upended by a combined total of six points, 25-27, 21-25, 27-25, 25-27.Sydney Morris led the offense with 18 kills while Dana Cleavenger handed out 53 assists and recorded four service aces. -
Pirates Weary Against Citrus
October 02, 2013Playing their seventh ranked opponent in 10 matches, the Pirate volleyball team appeared a little weary Wednesday, falling to No. 17 Citrus 25-20, 25-19, 25-11 at the Athletic Event Center. Mehgan Lambert had 10 kills and nine digs for Ventura (1-9) and Sarah Veloz recorded 16 digs. Dana Cleavenger handed out 25 assists for the Pirates, who wrapped up their non-conference schedule with the contest. -
Tough Night for Spikers at CoC
September 27, 2013It was a tough night and a tough loss for the VC volleyball team Friday night as the Pirates fell 20-25, 20-25, 19-25 to No. 23 College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. Mehgan Lambert and Sydney Morris each contributed nine kills for Ventura and Kirra Drury put away eight. Morris and libero Sarah Veloz recorded 10 digs each. -
Volleyball Falls at No.18 Cypress
September 25, 2013In their continuing tour of ranked non-conference oppoennts, the Ventura College volleyball team fell in straight sets at No. 18 Cypress College Wednesday evening, 11-25, 26-28, 11-25. Team captain Jasmine Perez led VC (1-7) with five service aces on the evening while Kirra Drury and Mehgan Lambert recorded six and five kills, respectively. -
Ventura VB Solid in Loss
September 20, 2013If there was such a thing as a good loss, the Ventura College volleyball team has been piling them up this season. Playing their fourth match against a ranked opponent, the young Pirates battled Fullerton Friday night at the Athletic Event Center, only to come away with a 14-25, 22-25, 22-25 loss to the undefeated and No. 25-ranked Hornets. Mehgan Lambert led VC (1-6) with nine kills, five aces and 10 digs while Kirra Drury recorded eight kills. -
Spikers Come Close Twice
September 13, 2013On its first meeting of the summer, the Pirate volleyball team had a tough two-and-a-half hour workout. They needed all of that conditioning and then some Friday as they played nine grueling sets in two different matches, dropping both in heartbreaking fashion at the Athletic Event Center. VC (1-5) lost to Cal Lutheran's JV team in four sets, 26-28, 25-27, 25-23, 15-25 in the afternoon before a dramatic comeback fell short against Glendale in five sets, 24-26, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 13-15. -
Pirate VB Drops Close Match
September 11, 2013At the end of the night, the final score read 3-0 in favor of visiting Long Beach City College. But the Pirate volleyball team fought hard, holding leads late in the final two sets before falling to the No. 25 Vikings in VC's 2013 home opener Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Kirra Drury led the Pirate offense with 11 kills and Dana Cleavenger dolled out 31 assists. Meanwhile Jasmine Perez had a pair of service aces and Sydney Morris registered 12 digs for Ventura (1-3). -
Volleyball Splits at Pierce Quad
September 06, 2013Showing considerable improvement, the Pirate volleyball team split a pair of matches at the LA Pierce Quad Friday in Woodland Hills. VC (1-2) lost to Grossmont College, the No. 17-ranked team at the end of 2012, in three sets, 25-20, 25-18, and 25-18 to begin the day before defeating San Bernardino Valley 25-13, 22-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-11. Sydney Morris led the way with 20 kills, 16 digs, and five aces in the two matches while Dana Cleavenger handed out 40 assists. -
Spikers Drop Season Opener
August 30, 2013The Ventura College volleyball team opened up the 2013 season on the short end of a 25-12, 25-5, 25-13 decision Friday at Irvine Valley College. VC struggled in their first match under new head coach Brad Lyans, but the preseason No. 18-ranked Lasers had much to do with that. Kirra Drury led VC with seven kills. -
Lyans Named Volleyball Coach
April 16, 2013Brad Lyans has been named the head volleyball coach at Ventura College. He takes the reins for 2013, his first with the Pirates, and looks to add to and enhance the program’s rich volleyball tradition. To do so, the successful, long-time Southern California coach brings along an extensive coaching resume, coupled with an excellent understanding of the two-year college volleyball community in California.
