Ventura Men Open Title Defense with Sweep
April 08, 2025The VC men's tennis team opened defense of their 2024 state title with a 5-0 sweep over Fullerton in the first round of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. The back end of the Pirates' singles line up, Ariitea Cotti-Helme and Leo Pham, completed the victory after all three VC doubles teams produced wins over the Hornets. -
VC qualifies Four Singles, Three Doubles Teams for State
April 05, 2025The Pirates' men's tennis team had a solid pair of days at the Western State Conference Championships Firday and Saturday, qualifying four singles players and three doubles teams for the 3C2A State Championships at The Ojai Tournament later this month. Rafael Matias led the effort with his runner-up finish in singles play while Yusen Sato, Yanis Guerrout and Haru Nakayama all will advance in singles. Matias and Guerrout, and Sato and Nakayama both played in the WSC semifinals while Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien also qualified for state. -
Pirate Men Continue play at WSC Championships
April 03, 2025The VC men's tennis team qualified three singles players and three doubles teams for the 3C2A State Championships at The Ojai during the first day of play in the Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships at the VC Tennis Center Thursday. Haru Nakayama and Yusen Sato were among the three Pirate doubles duos to qualify for state, along with Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien, along with Rafael Matias and Yanis Guerrout. -
Men's Tennis Ends Regular Season with Sweep
March 31, 2025The VC men's tennis team ended the regular season on Monday with a 9-0 sweep over 4-year NAIA school Hope International. Yanis Guerrout and Leo Pham each won singles matches in super tiebreakers to complete th esweep while Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien started the day with a solid win in No. 3 doubles. Rafael Matias, Yusen Sato and Haru Nakayama joined Guerrout as double-winners on the day. -
Pirates Earn Coach Emery's 400th Career Win at VC
March 25, 2025On a milestone day at the VC Tennis Center, the Pirates shut out Fresno 9-0 Tuesday earning head coach Nelson Emery his 400th career men's tennis victory at Ventura College. Sophomore Rafael Matias won in No. 1 doubles with Yanis Geurrout and also prevailed in his No. 1 singles match to earn his 50th career victory in singles and doubles at Ventura College. -
Ventura Men's Tennis Blanks Fullerton
March 24, 2025The VC men's tennis team shutout Fullerton 9-0 Monday at the VC Tennis Center to begin the final full week of the regular season. Ariitea Cotti-Helme and Leop Pham demonstrated the Pirates' depth, both winning love and love in Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, helping post the victory. -
VC Stretches WSC Win Streak to 31 Matches
March 19, 2025The VC men's tennis team completed another undefeated Western State Conference run with a 9-0 victory over visiting Santa Barbara Wednesday, their 31st straight conference win dating back to 2019. Yusen Sato and Leo Pham each won their singles matches love and one while Haru Nakayama only gave up two games in his singles victory. -
Men's Tennis Sweeps Orange Coast in Easy Win
March 18, 2025The VC men's tennis team kept things rolling Tuesday with a 9-0 victory at Orange Coast in their first action in 11 days. Rafael Matias and Max Bauedry were each double winners for Ventura in the non-conference match. -
Men's Tennis Drops Match at Division III Occidental
March 07, 2025The VC men's tennis team dropped a close 6-3 decision to NCAA Division III Occidental College Friday in Eagle Rock. Leo Pham was a double-winner against the Tigers taking No. 3 doubles with Manolo Vanbesien and capturing the No. 6 singles match in straight sets. Rafael Matias also earned a point for VC in No. 1 singles. -
VC Men Keep Up Streak at Bakersfield
March 06, 2025The Pirates' men's tennis team continued their Western State Conference dominance Thursday with an 8-1 win at Bakersfield. Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien won together in No. 3 doubles then each won their singles matches as double-winners on the day. -
Ventura Defeats Glendale in Men's Tennis
March 04, 2025For the second time in five days, the Pirates' men's tennis team defeated Glendale 6-3. Despite the same score, the results were different in the match with Yanis Guerrout providing two points for Ventura in No. 2 doubles with Rafael Matias and in No. 3 singles. Matias prevailed in his No. 1 singles match, as well. -
Ventura Tennis Falls to Cal Tech 5-4
March 01, 2025The VC men's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 decision to NCAA Division III Cal Tech Saturday at the VC Tennis Center. Rafael Matias amd Yamis Guerrout were double-winners for the Pirates. Matias and Guerrout won together in No. 2 doubles while also earning points in Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectfully. Max Beaudry partnered with Manolo Vanbesien to win in No. 3 doubles. -
VC Tops Glendale in WSC Play
February 28, 2025The VC men's tennis team defeated Glendale -3 Friday in Western State Conference play. Rafael Matias was a double winner for the Pirates in No. 2 doubles with Yanis Guerrout and in No. 1 singles. Meanwhile, Haru Nakayama won a three-set threiller in no. 4 singles to help propel Ventura to the triumph in the rematch from the 2024 SoCal Regional Final. -
Pirates Blast Vaqueros, 8-1
February 25, 2025The VC men's tennis team blasted Santa Barbara Tuesday 8-1. Yusen Sato and Haru Nakayama were each double winners on the day, together in No. 1 doubles, and individually in Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, along with Yanis Guerrout, in No. 2 doubles with Rafael Matias and No. 3 singles. -
Ventura Falls to Division III Pomona Pitzer
February 22, 2025The VC men's tennis team has played many four year schools in recent years, and they continued the trend Saturday hosting NCAA Division III Pomona Pitzer. Despite the 9-0 defeat, the Pirates battled, including a pair of tiebreakers in singles play from Rafael Matias and Leo Pham in the Nos. 1 and 6 matches, respectively. Yanis Guerrout and Ariitea Cotti-Helme also battled to 7-5 set losses in singles play. -
Pirates Roll Past Mt. SAC with Shutout
February 21, 2025The VC men's tennis team rolled Friday, defeating Mt. San Antonio 9-0 at the VC Tennis Center. Leo Pham led the way with a love, love win at No. 3 singles and he teamed up with Ariitea Cotti-Helme to win in No. 3 doubles. Yanis Guerrout was also a double winner with Rafael Matis in No. 1 doubles, and in No. 1 singles. -
Men's Tennis Sweep Past Bakersfield
February 20, 2025In a clean sweep, the Pirtes' men's tennis team defeated Bakersfield 9-0 Thursday at the VC Tennis Center. Jules Marquez Fichet made his VC debut with a love and love victory in No. 5 singles while Max Beaudry also recorded a shutout win in the No. 4 singles slot. Rafael Matias, Manolo Vanbesien and Beaudry all won two matches on the day. -
Men's Tennis Edges Riverside in Home Opener
February 18, 2025After two weeks of rain-outs and postponements, the Pirates' men;'s tennis team made their 2025 home debut with an exciting 5-4 victory over Riverside at the VC Tennis Center. Haru Nakayama, Ariitea Cotti-Helme and Leo Pham produced wins in Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles, the latter two in super tiebreakers to bring VC back from a 4-2 deficit in the triumph. Yanis Guerrout also won in No. 3 singles while Max Beaudry and Manolo Vanbesien won their No. 3 doubles contest. -
Men's Tennis Easily Captures 2025 Season Opener
February 04, 2025The defednig 3C2A State Champion men's tennis team opened their 2025 season with an easy 6-1 victory at NCAA Div. III Whittier College Tuesday afternoon. Yusen Sato and Haru Nakayama each recorded a pair of wins, together in doubles and in Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. -
VC Athletics 13th in California in NATYCAA Cup
August 12, 2024The Ventura College Athletic Department claimed its 14th Top-13 finish in 19 years, placing 13th in California in the 2023-24 all-sports National Association of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup standings. Pirate Athletics totaled 106 points overall, besting its 105.5 points earned in 2022-23 that placed 12th. Ventura was also 17th for the second straight year in the Daktronics Cup Standings with two-years schools from California, Oregon and Washington. -
VC Lists 70 transfers to 4-Year Schools
August 01, 2024The Ventura College Athletic Department is proud to announce the transfer of 71 student athletes to four-year schools following their time with the Pirates. 48 of those transfers plan to continue their sport with 34 earning athletic scholarships. The VC class of 2024 will transfer to 48 different schools in 19 different states across the country. Additionally, 17 of the Pirate alumni have earned academic scholarships at their new schools. -
Men's Tennis Champions on the Court and in the Classroom
July 30, 2024The 3C2A State Champion VC men's tennis team added to their banner year by earning All-Academic Team honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association last week. The Pirates were one of 14 JUCO men's tennis teams from around the country recognized by the ITA for academic excellence, three of which are from California. Additionally, Ventura had seven student athletes awarded Scholar Athlete awards for outstanding individual accomplishment in the classroom. -
Emery, Matias & Abreu Earn ITA All-American Awards
May 06, 2024Cody Ray Emery, Rafael Matias and Lucas Abreu all earned 3C2A All-American Awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their play during the 2024 season. Emery was also named the ITA Juco West Region Sophomore Player of the Year. Emery and Abreau, along with Matias and Julian Tellez were named ITA 3C2A All-Americans in doubles. -
Pirates Dominate Men's Tennis All-WSC Awards
May 03, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team was featured in the All-Western State Conference awards for the 2024 season, with all six singles players earning first team honors and all three doubles teams being named second team all-conference. Cody Ray Emery led the award winners for VC as the Co-Player of the Year award leading the Pirates to their 20th WSC crown in the past 26 years. -
Matias & Tellez Finish in Final Four; Pirates Claim Gorham Cup
April 28, 2024VC's doubles pair of Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez finished the 2024 season Sunday in the 3C2A State Doubles Final Four at The Ojai Tournament. The Pirates' men's tennis team, meanwhile, was awarded the Gorham Cup for the overall California Community College team champion during the four day of singles and doubles play to close the season. -

Pirates Claim One-Fourth of Ojai Quarterfinals
April 26, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team advanced two singles players and two doubles teams into the quarterfinal round of the 3C2A State Tournament at The Ojai on Friday. Cody Ray Emery and Robinson Pelluault will face off in a Round of 8 match Saturday morning while the doubles pairs of Emery and Lucas Abreu along with Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez will play quarterfinal matches on Saturday afternoon. -
Men's Tennis Perfect on Day 1 of The Ojai
April 25, 2024A day after capturing the state team title, the VC men's tennis team was back at it on the opening day of the 3C2A State Singles and Doubles Championships at The Ojai Tournament. Five VC singles players and three doubles teams were perfect on the day with all moving forward to day two of the draw, including Robinson Pelluault, who came from behind to win his Round of 64 match at Rio Mesa High School. -
Ventura Sweeps American River for 3rd State Title
April 24, 2024On a picture-perfect day for tennis, the Ventura College men’s tennis team had a picture-perfect ending to their 2024 season with a 5-0 sweep over American River College from Sacramento in the 3C2A State Championship at the VC Tennis Center. Julian Tellez clinched the winner for the Pirates (18-6) in No. 4 singles after Rafael Matias had recorded a love and love win in the No. 2 slot. The title is the third for VC under longtime head coach Nelson Emery, their first since 2010. -
Ventura Advances to State Championship with SoCal Title
April 20, 2024Lucas Abreu had a pretty good day Saturday. After teaming up with Cody Ray Emery to win at No. 1 doubles for the Pirates men's tennis team against Glendale in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Final, the VC sophomore clinched the match against the Vaqueros with a come-from-behind win in singles to propel Ventura to the state championship match on Wednesday April 24. Edgar Ploquin also produced a pair of victories as the Pirates advanced to the state final for the first time since 2013.
