Pirate Tennis Advances to SoCal Finals, State Final Four
April 16, 2024The VC men's tennis team avenged their only regular season loss to a community college team since 2019 and advanced to the State Final Four with a resounding 5-1 triumph over Riverside in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Semifinals Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirate avenged a 5-4 defeat to the Tigers on March 1 behind a 3-0 sweep in doubles and wins by Julian Tellez and Edgar Ploquin in singles play. -
Men's Tennis Sweeps Through SoCal Quarterfinals
April 09, 2024The VC men's tennis team opened the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs Tuesday with a sweeping 5-0 win over Mt. San Antonio. The No. 2-seeded Pirates claimed all three doubles matches before Edgar Ploquin and Leo Pham-Kobayashi won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to clinch the victory.

Emary and Abreu Capture WSC Doubles Crown
April 06, 2024VC's Cody Ray Emery and Lucas Abreau won the Western State Conference men's doubles title on the final day of the WSC Championships Saturday at the VC Tennis Center. Additionally, Robinson Pelluault and Edgar Ploquin qualified for the 3C2A State Championships through the doubles back draw and Abreau punched his ticket to The Ojai in singles play.

Pirates Men Continue Success at WSC Championships
April 05, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team continued its string of success Friday on the third day of the Western State Conference Championships at the VC Tennis Center. Cody Ray Emery moved into Saturday's singles final and also advanced with Lucas Abreau to the doubles semifinals. Meanwhile, Robinson Pelluault qualified for the 3C2A State Championships in the singles back draw.

Three Pirate Men Advance to The Ojai
April 04, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team had three players qualify for the 3C2A State Championships in play at the Western State Conference Championships Thursday at the VC Tennis Center. Cody Ray Emery, Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez all advanced to the quarterfinal round of the draw to earn their spots at The Ojai.

March 28, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team defeated Bakersfield 8-1 Thursday at the Pierpont Racquet Club to complete their 2024 Western State Conference slate with a perfect 8-0 record.

Pirate Tennis Retains Pfister Cup at North/South Challenge
March 23, 2024The VC men's tennis team posted two victories on Saturday in Bakersfield to retain the Pfister Cup at the North South Challenge. The Pirates defeated Fresno 7-1 in the morning match before shutting out Chabot 7-0 in the afternoon affair. Julian Tellez and Edgar Ploquin captured two doubles wins together and also each won twice in singles in the two matches for Ventura (13-6, 5-0).

Men's tennis Defeats Foothill at North/South Challenge
March 22, 2024The VC men's tennis team defeated a short-handed Foothill College team 9-0 Friday on the opening day of the Pfister Cup North/South Challenge in Bakersfield. The Pirates were able to spread the wealth against the Owls with eight different players recording victories, including the doubles team of Cooper Rowlands and Tiebe Verschaeve.

20 Years of Titles, Men's Tennis Clinches WSC Crown
March 20, 2024The VC men's tennis team defeated Santa Barbara 7-2 on Tuesday clinching the program's 20th Western State Conference title in 26 competitive seasons under head coach Nelson Emery. Leo Pham-Kobayashi and Lucas Abreau each totaled two wins for VC, first in No. 2 doubles, then in the Nos. 2 and 6 singles, respectively, for the Pirates (10-6, 5-0).

Ventura Blanks Orange Coast, 9-0
March 15, 2024The VC men's tennis team swept past visiting Orange Coast 9-0 Friday at the VC Tennis Center. After close doubles matches, the Pirates swept six singles contests by a combined score of 72-20. Cody Ray Emery captured his No. 1 match love and one while Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez each prevailed one and one.

VC Defeats Glendale to Take Control of WSC
March 13, 2024In a Western State Conference showdown, the VC men's tennis team defeated Glendale 6-3 Wednesday after play was suspended Thursday March 7 due to weather. Edgar Ploquin was a double winner with victories in No. 3 doubles with Julian Tellez and in No. 6 singles. Tellez also added a point when play resumed claiming the No. 4 singles contest. Cody Ray Emery won his No. 1 singles match.

VC Tennis Has Difficult Weekend Against 4-Year Schools
March 10, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team played up again over the weekend, falling to Occidental College on Saturday before dropping a decision to NCAA Division III No. 4-ranked Case Western Reserve on Sunday. Cody Ray Emery provided two points for Ventura, defeating Occidental in doubles with Rafael Matias and winning his singles match on Saturday against the Tigers.

Pirate Tennis Falls to Riverside
March 01, 2024For the first time in nearly five years, the Pirates' men;s tennis team dropped a regular-season match against community college competition on Friday. VC fell at Riverside 5-4 in the tightly contested match with the Tigers. VC sophomore Julian Tellez won a pair of points with a win in the No. 3 doubles match with partner Edgar Ploquin and a win in the No. 3 singles contest.

February 27, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team took over the top spot in the Western State Conference standings Tuesday with a 7-2 victory over Glendale at the VC Tennis Center. Lucas Abreau, Julian Tellez and Edgar Ploquin were all double-winners for VC (6-3, 2-0).

February 23, 2024The VC men's tennis team opened Western State Conference play Friday with a 9-0 sweep over Santa Barbara at the VC Tennis Center. Sophomore Robinson Pelluault was one of five players who moved up one slot in singles and still provided points in the triumph. The Pirates (5-3, 1-0) did not drop a set in singles play in defeating the Vaqueros.

Men's Tennis Battles NCAA Div. I Hawaii
February 21, 2024The VC men's tennis team took a big step up on Wednesday hosting the University of Hawaii at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirates fell to the Warriors 7-0 but were very competitive against the NCAA Division I program. Rafael Matias and Cody Ray Emery both went to three sets in their singles matches before falling.

Pirates Drop Just 10 Games in Runaway Win
February 16, 2024The VC men's tennis team was nearly flawless Friday afternoon, dropping a combined 10 games in singles and doubles play in their 9-0 sweep of Saddleback at the VC Tennis Center. Rafael Matias did not lose a game in No. 2 doubles with Julian Tellez and in No. 2 singles while Lucas Abreau played a shutout with Cody Ray Emery in No. 1 doubles and dropped one game in his No. 3 singles match. Robinson Pelluault was perfect in No. 5 singles.

Men's Tennis Battles 4-Year Schools on Two-Day Swing
February 12, 2024The VC men's tennis team went on the road Monday and Tuesday to battle a pair of four-year schools. The Pirates battled but fell short against Menlo College 6-1 before dropping a contest at Fresno Pacific, 7-0. Cody Ray Emery won his No. 1 singles match against Menlo on Monday while Lucas Abreau and Thomas Lindner won at No. 2 doubles at FPU. Rafael Matias and Abreau both went the distance in their singles matches on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

VC Men Sweep Past Mounties, 9-0
February 09, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team swept past Mt. San Antonio 9-0 in a non-conference match Friday in Walnut. Julian Tellez and Robinson Pelluault both swept their opponents in singles play while Edgar Ploquin yielded just one game in his singles triumph. VC also swept two of three doubles matches.

Men's Tennis Wins at NAIA Hope International
February 07, 2024The VC men's team played up on Wednesday, taking a 6-1 decision at Hope International University, a four-year NAIA program in Fullerton. Rafael Matias and Lucas Abreau, along with Robinson Pelluault and Edgar Ploquin each won their doubles matches to earn the first point for the Pirates and also each earned singles points in the victory.

Beach VB, Men's Tennis Named State Scholar Teams
February 02, 2024The 2023 Ventura College beach volleyball and men's tennis teams have been named as California Community College Athletic Association State Scholar teams in a release by the 3C2A earlier this week. Beach volleyball earned its first state academic award while the men's tennis team earned its fourth state award. The awards are the VC Athletic Department's 42nd and 43rd State Scholar Team awards since the program's inception in 1997-98. Ventura has been awarded at least one state team academic award in each of the past 23 non-covid academic years.

Men's Tennis Rolls Over Fullerton in Opener
February 02, 2024The VC men's tennis team opened the 2024 season with an easy 9-0 sweep over Fullerton Friday in Orange County. Lucas Abreau was one of four Pirates to win two points, claiming his No. 1 doubles match with Rafael Matias, then winning in No. 3 singles. Matias, Cody Ray Emery and Julian Tellez also produced a pair of points in the match for Ventura (1-0) as they won their 45th straight regular season match against community college competition dating back to Feb. 15, 2019.

VC Mourns Loss of Former Tennis Player/Coach Brad McClain
December 20, 2023After a nearly three-year battle against cancer, former VC men's tennis conference champion and state champion assistant coach Brad McClain died Nov. 21, 2023 at his home in Ventura. He was 61. McClain most recently coached nine seasons assisting Nelson Emery with the Pirates' men's and women's tennis teams, 2008-2017. Co-Head Coach would probably be a more appropriate title as McClain was at the center of an ultimately successful time for Pirate tennis.

Pirate Student Athletes Prominent on Dean's Lists for 22-23
August 07, 2023Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2022-23, achieving an overall 3.29 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a 3.19 overall GPA in the spring semester. A total of 108 Pirates achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List in the fall 2022 term while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 53 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In spring 2023, 110 VC student athletes were named on the Dean's List with 45 posting perfect GPA's.

Men's Tennis Earns National Academic Distinction
July 27, 2023With an overall team grade point average of 3.71 during the spring semester, the Ventura College men's tennis team is one of eight programs nationally, and the only squad in California, to be honored as an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Additionally, the Pirates have eight individuals who have been named ITA Scholar Athletes. Only 11 men's tennis student athletes from California were honored by the national coaches' association.

Tajima, Serralonga and Jabin Earn ITA All-American Honors
June 14, 2023The VC men's tennis team is well represented on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's CCCAA All-American team. Jinsei Tajima and Santino Serralonga each earned All-American nods in singles play for the 2023 season while Tajima and Philemon Jabin were named All-Americans in doubles.

Men's Tennis Dominates All-WSC Awards
May 17, 2023The Ventura College men's tennis team went 6-0 in Western State Conference match play, winning 52 of 54 match-ups en route to the 2023 conference title. That dominance was reflected with seven Pirates earning All-WSC accolades, including co-MVP awards for Jinsei Tajima and Santino Serralonga. Philemon Jabin, Valentino Oggero and Julian Tellez also earned first team All-WSC awards in singles while Lucas Abreau and Eduardo Gorgonio Criscuolo joined with first team accolades in doubles.

Tajima and Jabin Finsh as State Runners-Up at The Ojai
April 30, 2023The VC men's tennis doubles team of Jinsei Tajima and Philemon Jabin finished a stellar two-year career with the Pirates by claiming the silver medal in the CCCAA State Doubles Tournament completed Sunday at The Ojai Tournament. The duo won their semifinal match in the morning before falling in a supertiebreaker in the afternoon at Libbey Park in Ojai.

April 29, 2023Ventura's No. 1 doubles pair of Jinsei Tajima and Philemon Jabin advanced to the CCCAA State Doubles semifinals with a quarterfinal win on Saturday at The Ojai Tournament. Meanwhile, Tajima and Santino Serralonga each fell in their quarterfinal match-up in singles play.
