The Ventura College volleyball team continued its winning ways with a three-set sweep of visiting West Los Angeles Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center, 25-14, 25-10, 25-21. Kayla Hosch was a perfect 6-6 on kill attempts to lead the Pirates and Shantalle Ruiz also recorded six winners. Kelly Rodriguez and Vanessa Ihrke each had five kills as Raphaella Rosales paced the offense with 24 assists. Faith Mackie had 15 digs and four service aces for Ventura (14-3, 4-0), which posted its ninth consecutive victory.
The Pirates made it look easy in the early going, racing to a 13-3 lead in the first set, prompting a Wildcat timeout. VC maintained the edge through the rest of the set, claiming the win 25-14.
In the second set it was more of the same for Ventura, jumping out to a 5-1 advantage en route to the 25-10 set victory.
After taking a 5-0 lead in the third set, VC eased off the gas pedal a bit, maintaining their advantage, but not blowing West LA out of the water. The Pirates claimed the third set 25-21 to sweep the match.
Ventura dominated the serve once again, recording 16 service aces as a team. Rosales claimed four aces in the match while Gabby Boado, Kasie Spencer and Mackie all produced three aces. Mackie was also good with the pass, posting a 2.38 rating in 16 pass attempts. Boado handed out 12 assists.
The Pirates will begin the second round of Western State Conference play on Friday Oct. 26, hosting Santa Barbara City College. The match is set to begin at 6:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.
