  • VC Brings Home 7th Banner
    March 16, 2014
After a season of overpowering teams with its offense and 3-point shooting, the Pirates' women's basketball team turned the tables Sunday and brought home the program's seventh state championship with defense. Ventura defeated Mt. San Antonio 68-55 Sunday afternoon in Cerritos to win the title, holding the Mounties to 18 percent shooting and just 13 points in the game-deciding first half. VC (32-3) built a 26-13 advantage at the break, leading wire to wire in the victory before a large crowd dominated by orange and black. • Pirates Return to State Finals
    March 14, 2014
Lisa Marie Sanchez’s flawless start ended with a sickening thud. And for a moment, it looked like the Ventura College women’s basketball team’s championship run had been halted, along with its on-court maestro. Despite doubling over in pain with back spasms after a hard foul on a 3-point play less than eight minutes into Friday night’s CCCAA state semifinal at Cerritos College, the sophomore point guard returned to guide the Pirates into its state-record ninth state championship game. Sanchez had 26 points and eight assists, Adrianne Sloboh had 10 points and 23 rebounds and shooters Hernandez and Adrianna Vega shook off early cold spells to combine for 10 3-pointers as the Pirates flew past Fresno City, 87-73.

Hernandez hit again on a floater from the left side and Sanchez assisted a field goal for Adrianne Sloboh. By the time Wednesday's playoff game was 2:35 old, VC had a 10-0 lead on the visiting Orange Coast Pirates, as Ventura rolled to a 103-63 victory in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Semifinals at the Athletic Event Center.

    December 21, 2013

Rule No. 1 is "Don't beat yourself, " but for the third time the season, the Pirates (12-3) did just that on Saturday night. Ventura shot a dismal 12-26 at the free throw line and missed at numerous open looks close to the basket in their 75-72 loss to Pasadena City College, halting the team's 5-game winning streak and likely ending VC's brief time atop the state polls.
