Game two was definitely an improvement over game one. A day after one of the worst offensive efforts in program history, the Pirates' women's basketball team put up one of the best, running away from Antelope Valley 90-31 on the second day of the LA Valley Crossover. Rhiana Dougan hit seven 3-pointers en route to a career high 27 points to lead Ventura (1-1). Katie Campbell and Sienna Brown totaled 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Davina Del Castillo added nine.
The Pirates who only totaled 37 points in an opening-game loss at LA Valley a day earlier, wasted little time to take control of the game. Del Castillo started things with a steal and lay-up followed by a Dougan 3-pointer. After Del Castillo's second score, and a steal and bucket by Kyleesha Green the Pirates led 9-0 3:31 into the game. Dougan closed the quarter with three straight triples and VC led 26-4 at the end of the period.
Dougan made it four threes in a row to begin the second quarter, and Campbell followed up with two treys of her own around a Celeste Salazar bucket and Mary Shirley's free throw. The Pirates surpassed their point total from the night before with 3:36 left in the second. Avery Brunk and Melissa Ohmie netted scores in the final minute of the half as VC led the Marauders 50-14.
Ventura continued the onslaught in the second half as Brown scored six of the Pirates' first nine points of the half. Dougan hit her sixth three of the game to make it 64-17 at the 4:21 mark of the period. Campbell had a trey and a deuce around two charity tosses from Del Castillo and VC led 71-21 after three quarters.
Ventura kept the hammer down in the final stanza while getting different players game experience. VC went on to the easy 90-31 victory.
The Pirates will make their home debut on Friday Nov. 25 against Santa Monica in the opening round of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.
