VC alumna Cynthia Hernandez ‘14 begins her first season as the Pirates’ lead assistant, her second stint on the coaching staff. She was also an assistant coach in 2016-2018.
Hernandez was an integral part of the 2014 Pirate state championship team. She was a sharpshooter extraordinaire as a sophomore, leading the nation and setting a program record with 115 made 3-pointers. She also set a record for 3-point effeciency, shooting 46.7 percent from behind the arc while earning second-team CCCWBCA All-State honors. She finished her VC career second in 3-point percentage and fifth in 3-pointers made.
Hernandez continued her academic and playing careers at Rutgers University of the Big 10 Conference. She helped lead the Scarlet Knights to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a junior where they fell to eventual national champion UConn. Her senior year, Rutgers advanced to the second round of the WNIT Tournament.
Hernandez completed her Master’s Degree from the University of South Dakota in 2018 and served as the head girls basketball coach at her alma mater, Buena High School, from 2018-2022.
