Women's Basketball Sends Five to Four-Year Universities
August 15, 2017The Ventura College women's basketball team capped the 2016-17 season by sending five student athletes to four-year universities with four planning on continuing their basketball careers on athletic scholarships. The quintet adds to a long line of four-year transfers in the 27-year tenure of head coach Ned Mircetic. Since 1990-91, at least 134 Pirates have matriculated to four-year schools, with 68 of those transfers also continuing their basketball careers. -
Pirates Ranked No. 7 in Nation on WBCA Honor Roll
July 20, 2017On the strength of another impressive performance in the classroom, the Ventura College women's basketball team has earned the No. 6 ranking in the 2016-17 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic honor Roll for junior and community colleges. The Pirates posted a team Grade Point Average of 3.325 for the academic year, placing the team on the national list for the 13th time in the past 14 years. -
Slow Start Ends Pirates' Season at the Final Four
March 11, 2017For the second straight night the Pirates' women's basketball team got off to a slow start, and unlike the state quarterfinals, VC could not overcome it Saturday, falling 67-52 to top-ranked Mt. San Antonio. Ventura fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter and never recovered in the Pirates' 15th appearance in the CCCAA State Final Four. Katie Campbell had 22 points and Davina Del Castillo pulled in 12 rebounds to lead Ventura, who finishes the season with a 28-6 record. -
Pirates Sail Past San Francisco to Final Four
March 10, 2017Five minutes into the state quarterfinals, things did not look good. The Pirates' women's basketball team trailed 15-2 and had missed nine of 10 shots. Little did anyone know, VC had the Rams right where they wanted them. Ventura held steady and methodically dismantled Northern California's No. 2 seed from that point on, outscoring CCSF 77-51 for the 79-66 victory, advancing to the CCCAA State Final Four for the 15th time. All-State guard Katie Campbell led the effort with 31 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. -
Campbell, Green Named All-State For Pirates
March 06, 2017Freshman guard Katie Campbell and sophomore guard Kyleesha Green have been named to the the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-State team for the 2016-17 season. Campbell was a first-team All-State selection while Green earned a third-team All-State nod. The two become the program's 38th and 39th all-state selections since 1986. This is the 13th time since 1993 that two Pirates have been honored in the same season. -
VC Women Elite Once Again
March 04, 2017In front of a large crowd in the final home game of the season, the VC women's basketball team reached elite status for the 16th time in head coach Ned Mircetic's 27 seasons with a 65-50 victory over Los Angeles Valley College. Katie Campbell scored a game-high 26 points, including a 30-footer to close the third quarter, to lead the Pirates (27-5), who also got a two-for one deal on double-doubles as Davina Del Castillo totaled 11 points and 13 rebounds and Kyleesha Green had 10 points with 10 boards. -
VC to Host 2018, 2019 CCCAA State Basketball Championships
February 28, 2017SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Community College Athletic Association Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will return to Ventura College in 2018 and 2019 it was announced by the organization. The championships return to the Ventura where it was last held in 2011. Home to four men's and seven women's championship banners, the VC Athletic Event Center is one of the premier venues in the state, hosting the men's championships in 1972 and 1973, the women's championships in 1993, and the 2011 combined championships. -
VC Women Advance Behind career Nights From Brown, Salazar
February 25, 2017The VC women's basketball team has had success this season because they have a variety of players who are able to lead. Saturday's 83-65 victroy over visiting Santa Monica in the SoCal Regional Semifinals was a perfect example. Sienna Brown had a career-high 23 points with 11 rebounds and Celeste Salazar also totaled a career-high with 12 points, including a 3-5 night behgind the 3-point stripe, off the bench. The Pirates advanced to the state "Sweet 16" for the 21st time in the 27-year tenure of head coach Ned Mircetic. -
Campbell WSC MVP, Starting Five All-Conference
February 21, 2017Freshman guard Katie Campbell has been named the Western State Conference North Division Most Valuable Player in voting by the conference coaches last weekend. The other four starters for the Pirates, Davina Del Castillo, Rhiana Dougan, Kyleesha Green and Sienna Brown were all named first team All-Conference fo rthe 2017 season. -
VC Women Earn No. 3 Seed in SoCal Regional Playofffs
February 20, 2017The Pirates' women's basketball team has earned the No 3 seed in the 2017 CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs, giving them home court advantage to a possible berth in the state tournament. Ventura (25-5) will open post-season play at the Athletic Event Center on Saturday Feb. 25 against Santa Monica (19-9) or San Diego City (14-12). The Corsairs and Knights will play a first round game on Wednesday Feb. 22 in Santa Monica. Tip-off Saturday is scheduled for 7:00 pm and the game can be seen live on the VC Sports Network. -
Pirates Find Perfect Ending In Regular Season Finale
February 18, 2017Rhiana Dougan scored a career-high 28 points on just 15 shots, and Katie Campbell netted 22 as the Pirates' women's basketball team found a perfect ending to the regular season with a 90-67 victory in Santa Barbara Saturday night. Kyleesha Green finished one rebound shy a triple double once again for VC (25-5, 10-0) with 19 points, 10 assist and nine boards. -
Ventura Escapes Oxnard With Strong Fourth Quarter
February 15, 2017For three quarters Wednesday night the unthinkable was happening. Fresh off of clinching a share of the program's 27th straight Western State Conference title, the VC women's basketball team trailed visiting Oxnard, a team they had defeated by 35 points three weeks earlier, and looked bad in doing it. But a strong fourth quarter effort, led by 10 points and three 3-pointers from Rhiana Dougan, helped the Pirates outlast the upset-minded Condors 56-50. -
Pirates Use 3-Ball to Rein in 27-Peat at Moorpark
February 11, 2017At halftime, the Pirates' women's basketball team escaped the heat of Raider Pavilion by stepping outside into a gentle rain that was falling in Moorpark. Inside, the rain was anything but gentle as Ventura use the influence of 11 3-pointers to rein in the Raiders 71-44 and claim a share of their 27th straight Western State Conference title, a "27-Peat". Kyleesha Green led the way with 20 points, including a career-high six triples as VC defeated their cross-county rivals for the 59th straight time since 1991. -
Green leads Five Pirates in Double-Figures at Cuesta
February 08, 2017Kyleesha Green produced on of the best games in her career with 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a steal to lead the Pirates to an easy 85-40 win over Cuesta in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night. Katie Campbell also had a great fanatasy night with 16 points, eight boards, six assists, four blocks and three steals in the victory. -
VC Honors Past Champions, Defeats Allan Hancock
February 04, 2017The night began with the Pirates honoring the 1996 and 1997 state champions with their induction into the VC Athletics Hall of Fame. It ended with a 26-point win for VC as they maintain their advantage in the Western State Conference race. Katie Campbell led four Pirates in double figures with 25 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists as Ventura (21-5, 6-0) defeated visiting Allan Hancock College 75-50 at the Athletic Event Center Saturday night. -
96 & 97 Women's Basketball Teams Entering VC Hall of Fame
February 02, 2017This Saturday, February 4, the 1996 and 1997 women's basketball state champions will become the first teams in school history to be inducted into the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame. Their induction ceremony will immediately follow the men's game and precede the women's game against Allan Hancock College at the Athletic Event Center. Pirate Cagers Put Things Together In Blowout Win.
January 28, 2017It was a game a long time coming. The Pirates' women's basketball team, on the cusp of becoming a very good team for most of the season, put together a total team effort for 40 minutes to blow past visiting Santa Barbara 95-43. All 12 Pirates scored in the game with four players in double-figures and another two with nine points. Katie Campbell led the way with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. -
Dougan Leads Ventura Past Oxnard, 76-41
January 25, 2017Rhiana Dougan scored 24 points, including the first 13 of the game for Ventura as the Pirates cruised past Oxnard College 76-41 Wednesday at the Condor Center. The Pirate sophomore hit six 3-pointers in the game and Sienna Brown kicked in 10 points and seven rebounds. Making her first career start, Celeste Salazar had six points with six assists and a pair of steals for the Pirates (19-5, 4-0). -
Women's Basketball Honors 2017 "Favorite Teachers"
January 22, 2017Each year, every member of the sophomore class of the Ventura College women's basketball team selects a "Favorite Teacher" based on their own personal criteria. 2016-17 is the 12th year in which the team has honored their favorite teachers, and 68 awards have been presented, including this year. -
Ventura Outlasts Moorpark With Another Strong Final Quarter
January 21, 2017The Pirates' women's basketball team is developing a very good habit. For the sixth game in a row they produced a strong fourth quarter on both ends of the floor Saturday, pulling away from a strong effort by visiting Moorpark and posting a 58-45 victory at the Athletic Event Center. VC outscored the Raiders 14-4 in the final period, and they are now outscoring opponents 131-49 over the past six games in the final stanza. Kyleesha Green flirted with a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for Ventura (18-5, 3-0). -
Women's Basketball Races Past Cuesta 79-34
January 18, 2017Katie Campbell took the opening tip and hit Rhiana Dougan on the run for a lay-up to start the game and the Pirates did not slow up (much) from there, racing past visiting Cuesta College 79-34 Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Campbell finished with 26 points and seven assists while Dougan totaled 17 points in the victory. Kyleesha Green handed out a career-high 12 assists with four steals in the game for Ventura (17-5, 2-0). -
Pirate Women Outlast Hancock in WSC Opener
January 14, 2017The Allan Hancock College Bulldogs threw everything they had at the Pirates Saturday night in the Western State Conference opener for both teams. Hancock hit 11 3-pointers in the game and scored on seven of their first nine possessions in the third quarter, but another Ventura surge in the fourth quarter secured a 73-60 win in Santa Maria. Rhiana Dougan had 23 points, including 15 in the fourth period, to lead the Pirates (16-5, 1-0). Davina Del Castillo had 16 points with nine rebounds and three steals while Sienna Brown netted 15 points with five boards. -
VC Comes From Behind to Post Crossover Win
January 07, 2017In a roller coaster 2016-17 season, the Pirates' women's basketball team avoided what would have been the low point with a 24-10 fourth quarter to claim a 58-48 victory over Antelope Valley on day two of the Canyons Crossover in Santa Clarita. The Pirates shot 9-11 in the final period, and connected on six of eight free throws to come back from a four-point deficit to begin the stanza. -
Women's Basketball Continues to Roll in the New Year
January 06, 2017In their first game of the new year, the VC women's basketball team picked up where they left off in 2016 with a 78-45 victory over Citrus College on day one of the Canyons Crossover in Santa Clarita. Katie Campbell filled the stat sheet with 26 points, six rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocked shots to lead Ventura (14-5). Rhiana Dougan netted 21 points with four assists and four steals and Sienna Brown produced her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. -
Pirates Claim Optimist Tournament Title With Strong Performance
December 30, 2016They came to play. After two sub-par outings against LA Valley this season resulting in two disappointing defeats, the Pirates' women's basketball team came to play Friday, claiming a 79-39 victory over the Monarchs in the championship game of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament. Katie Campbell had an MVP performance with 31 points, four assists and four steals to lead the way. Sienna Brown was named all-tournament with her second double-double of the week, 10 points and 14 boards added to four blocked shots for Ventura (13-5). -
Ventura Advances to Finals of Optimist Tournament
December 29, 2016The Pirates opened up a 15-1 lead early, then stumbled through the rest of the game Thursday, holding off Irvine Valley 66-58 in the semifinals of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament at the Athletic Event Center. Katie Campbell had 23 points, four steals and three blocked shots to lead the way while Rhiana Dougan netted 17 points on the night. VC (12-5) advances to the championship game for the eight time in the eight-year history of the tournament. -
Cagers Return From Christmas on a Roll
December 28, 2016It was a Merry Christmas indeed for the Pirates' women's basketball team, and they returned from their short hiatus in top form Wednesday night with a strong 88-34 victory over Rio Hondo in the first round of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament at the Athletic Event Center. VC (11-5) had four players over 15 points in the game, led by Kyleesha Green's 20-point, six assist performance. Sienna Brown had her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. -
Pirates Roll Past Moorpark 84-46 to Claim Wild West Title
December 17, 2016As they did all weekend, the VC women's basketball team used a big run early in the game to separate out and ride to a lopsided victory in Saturday's 84-46 decision against Moorpark in the championship game of the Wild West Shootout at West Los Angeles College in Culver City. Tournament MVP Katie Campbell had 23 points, 12 rebounds and five assists to lead the way while all-tournament selection Kyleesha Green netted 14 points with three boards and three steals. -
Women's Basketball Runs Away from Citrus
December 15, 2016The Pirates got off to a fast start and never looked back Thursday, defeating Citrus College 59-30 in the first round of the Wild West Shootout at West Los Angeles College in Culver City. VC (8-5) opened the game with a 20-0 run, and held the Owls to a team-record two points in the first quarter to set the table for the victory. Sienna Brown had her fourth double-double of the year, her third in the past four games, with 14 points and 12 rebounds along with five blocked shots to lead the way for Ventura. -
VC Falls Too Far Behind For Comeback at LA Valley
December 11, 2016The VC women's basketball team fell into old habits Sunday afternoon, producing a dismal first half of play in the championship game of the LA Valley Buddy's All-Star Classic against the host Monarchs. The Pirates fell behind 32-15 at halftime and could not complete a furious second half comeback, falling 55-52. All-tournament selection Rhiana Dougan led the Pirates (7-5) with 15 points, playing nearly the entire 40 minute game. Sienna Brown had 15 rebounds.
