Faniel Earns First-Team All-State Honors
March 22, 2017Pirate basketball forward Vida Faniel has been named first-team All-State by the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association. Faniel, a sophomore from William Knight High School in Palmdale is one of 11 players from Southern California to earn the honor announced earlier this month. Faniel is the third player to earn first-team all-state honors under head coach Joey Ramirez. -
VC to Host 2018, 2019 CCCAA State Basketball Championships
February 28, 2017SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Community College Athletic Association Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will return to Ventura College in 2018 and 2019 it was announced by the organization. The championships return to the Ventura where it was last held in 2011. Home to four men's and seven women's championship banners, the VC Athletic Event Center is one of the premier venues in the state, hosting the men's championships in 1972 and 1973, the women's championships in 1993, and the 2011 combined championships. -
VC Ends Season With Tough Fight at Compton
February 25, 2017They kept up the fight, but in the end it just wasn't enough. The no. 18-seeded Ventura College men's basketball team held a halftime lead at No. 2 El Camino-Compton Center Saturday night, only to fall to the Tartars 96-80 in the SoCal Regional Semifinals in Compton. Ryan Sells had a career-high 20 points off the bench to lead Ventura (18-13) in their final game of the 2016-17 season. Cordel Hankerson netted 18 points and Vida Faniel had 10 points with eight rebounds. -
Pirates Advance With Solid Road Win at Irvine Valley
February 22, 2017The theme in the playoffs in win and advance. The Pirates' men's basketball team did just that Wednesday night with a solid 63-56 road victory at No. 15 seed Irvine Valley in the first round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs. Western State Conference MVP Vida Faniel produced yet another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace the 18th-seeded Pirates while Cordel Hankerson and Isiah Reyes chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively. -
Faniel, Ramirez headline VC All-WSC Selections
February 21, 2017Ventura College sophomore forward Vida Faniel was named the Western State Conference North Division Most Valuable Player for the 2017 season in voting by the conference coaches last weekend. VC head coach Joey Ramirez was named the WSC North Division Coach of the Year for the second straight season. -
Men's Basketball On The Road for CCCAA Regionals
February 20, 2017The Ventura College men's basketball team will be headed on the road for the 2017 CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs. The Pirates (17-12) have earned the No. 18 seed in the draw and will head to No. 15 Irvine Valley (14-13) for a first-round contest on Wednesday Feb. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm, and the game can be seen live on the VC Sports Network. -
Ventura Rolls Santa Barbara to Win WSC Crown Outright
February 18, 2017The VC men's basketball team jumped out to a 40-21 lead at halftime and never looked back, rolling past Santa Barbara 83-56 to claim the Western State Conference title outright in the regular season finale Saturday night. Vida Faniel led VC (17-12, 8-2) with 15 points and seven rebounds and Isiah Reyes had 14 points with three assists. Cordel Hankerson and Trevor LaCount also chipped in 10 points each and Eddie Cowan dished out seven assists in the Pirate victory. -
Pirates Clinch Second Straight WSC Crown
February 15, 2017The Pirates' men's basketball team had a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures, outlasting visiting Oxnard 90-76 Wednesday night to claim at least a share of their second straight Western State Conference championship. Cordel Hankerson had 21 points with six rebounds, and Vida Faniel netted 16, including seven straight points during a key stretch midway through the second half to lead Ventura (16-12, 7-2) in the victory. -
VC Men Can't Hold Second Half Lead at Moorpark
February 11, 2017The Pirates' men's basketball team held a nine-point advantage midway through the second half Saturday at Moorpark, but could not hang on, dropping a 78-77 decision to the Raiders. Vida Faniel had another strong outing for VC (15-12, 6-2) with 25 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Calvin Young and Cordel Hankerson also contributed 19 points to the effort for the Pirates while Eddie Cowan handed out four helpers. -
VC Men Win Showdown at Cuesta, Move Alone to First Place
February 08, 2017The VC men's basketball team responded to the challenge Wednesday night, handing the Cuesta Cougars a 79-68 defeat on their home floor to climb alone into first place in the Western State Conference North Division race. Isiah Reyes poured in 30 points, including a perfect 14-14 night at the charity stripe, to lead the Pirates (15-11, 6-1). Cordel Hankerson had 21 points in the victory and Vida Faniel turned in another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. -
Pirate Hoopers Stay in First With Strong Performance on BBQ Night
February 04, 2017On barbeque night at Ventura College, the men's basketball team posted a strong 85-75 victory over visiting Allan Hancock College Saturday at the Athletic Event Center. Cordel Hankerson found a new role off the bench and responded with 23 points and Isiah Reyes totaled 20 points in the victory. Vida Faniel had a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds and Eddie Cowan scored 11 points with four rebounds and four assists. -
VC Remains in First Following 88-72 Victory Over SBCC
January 28, 2017Cordel Hankerson poured in 31 points with 10 rebounds and three steals as the VC men's basketball team finished the first round of conference play with a 88-72 victory over visiting Santa Barbara on Saturday. Vida Faniel also had a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards as the Pirates (13-11, 4-1) remain in a first place tie with Cuesta with five conference games remaining. -
Hankerson, Reyes lead VC Past Oxnard, Pirate Back in First Place
January 25, 2017Cordel Hankerson scored 20 points, including three 3-pointers in the first half, and Isiah Reyes scored 20 points with three triples in the second half as the Ventura College men's basketball team defeated Oxnard 88-75 Wednesday evening at the Condors' nest. Vida Faniel contributed 18 points in the victory. The win coupled with Cuesta's loss at home to Hancock vaulted the Pirates back into a first place tie in the Western State Conference race. -
Pirate Men Back on Track With Victory Over Moorpark
January 21, 2017The Ventura College men's basketball team got back on track Saturday evening with a 79-67 victory over Moorpark College at the Athletic Event Center. Cordel Hankerson torched the nets for 27 points with six rebounds and five steals and Vida Faniel was solid once again with 21 points including an 11-11 night at the free throw line, with nine boards. Isiah Reyes returned to the lineup to contribute nine points off the bench for Ventura (11-11, 2-1). -
Ventura Comeback Falls Short Against Cuesta
January 18, 2017The Pirates' men's basketball team trailed a hot-shooting Cuesta team by as many as 15 points midway through the second half before staging a strong comeback with a chance to tie in the final seconds before falling 75-70 Wednesday evening at the Athletic Event Center. Vida Faniel continued his strong play with 27 points while Calvin Young and Cordel Hankerson each had 13 points for VC (10-11, 1-1). -
Fast Start Leads Pirate Cagers to WSC-Opening Victory
January 14, 2017Pirate sophomores Vida Faniel and Eddie Cowan led a fast start for the Ventura College men's basketball team, scoring or assisting the Pirates' first 18 points as VC raced to an 18-4 advantage over Allan Hancock College in their 78-59 victory in Santa Maria Saturday in the Western State Conference opener. Faniel finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds while Cowan totaled 14 points and eight assists for Ventura (10-10, 1-0). -
Ventura Falls on Last-Second Shot at Santa Monica
January 11, 2017The Ventura College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 91-90 decision Wednesday night at Santa Monica. The Corsairs erased a four-point deficit in the final minute, hitting a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining in the game to send VC home disappointed in their final non-conference game of the season. -
Slow Shooting Night Costs Pirates in Defeat
January 05, 2017The Pirates' men's basketball team had trouble finding a consistent shooting touch Thursday night, falling 70-58 to College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. VC (9-9) shot under 30 percent for the game and still managed to stay within striking distance of the Cougars until the final minutes. Vida Faniel led the Pirates with 16 points and six rebounds and Calvin Young chipped in 15 points with three boards and three assists. -
VC Men Drop New Year's Return Home
January 03, 2017In the first game of the new year, and the first game at home in nearly two months, the VC men's basketball team dropped a 97-68 decision to visiting Riverside City College Tuesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Vida Faniel had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead Ventura (9-8) while Eddie Cowan had a season-high 10 points and a team-high six assists in the contest. -
Pirate Men Fall in Sequoias Tournament Title Game
December 18, 2016In closely fought contest, the Ventura College men's basketball team fell to Cerritos 77-71 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Kirby Mannon Pepsi / Wyndham Hotel Tournament at College of the Sequoias in Visalia. Isiah Reyes and Cordel Hankerson led five players in double-figures with 15 points each. Trevor LaCount had 13 points and six rebounds and Vida Faniel totaled 11 points with eight boards. Ryan Sells also contributed 11 points for Ventura (9-7). -
Pirates Hang on to Top No. 6 San Bernardino Valley at COS
December 17, 2016Buoyed by a 20-3 run to open the second half, the Pirates' men's basketball team held on down the stretch for an 87-85 victory over No. 6-ranked San Bernardino Valley College in the semifinals of the Kirby Mannon Pepsi / Wyndham Hotel Tournament at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia Saturday. Cordel Hankerson led Ventura (9-6) for the second night in a row with 24 points while Calvin Young and Isiah Reyes chipped in 21 and 20 points, respectively. -
Pirates Top Century Mark in Sequoias Tourney Opener
December 16, 2016The Pirates' men's basketball team used a 19-4 run midway through the first half to take control in their 108-89 victory over El Camino Friday in the opening round of the Kirby Mannon Pepsi / Wyndham Hotel Tournament at College of the Sequoias in Visalia. Cordel Hankerson had 33 points on 12-19 shooting and Trevor LaCount netted 23 points on 9-11 shooting from the floor. Ventura (8-6) made an incredible 64 percent (41-64) of their field goal attempts in the victory over the Warriors. -
Fast Start Doesn't Hold Up for Pirates in Loss
December 04, 2016The VC men's basketball team got off to a fast start Sunday afternoon but could not make it hold up in their 92-67 loss to San bernardino Valley in the third place game of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster. Isiah Reyes scored 28 points with three assists and Taylor Sturgeon had seven points with a team-high six rebounds in the game for the Pirates (7-6). -
VC Falls in AVC Tournament Semifinals
December 03, 2016For the second time this year, the Pirates' men's basketball team put up a good fight against Antelope Valley, only to have the game end in defeat. Saturday in the semifinals of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament VC had the lead at halftime but could not make it hold up as the Marauders came back for the 76-67 win. Calvin Young had 19 points and Vida Faniel scored 12 with five rebounds to lead Ventura (7-5). -
Pirates Top Mira Costa at Antelope Valley Tournament
December 02, 2016VC sophomore Vida Faniel returned to his hometown with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates to an 83-74 victory over Mira Costa Friday in the first round of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster. Calvin Young hit five 3-pointers in route to 19 points and Crodel Hankerson netted 17 in the victory. -

November 22, 2016Calvin Young made a 3-pointer from an assist by Eddie Cowan with 18 seconds remaining to send the game to oevrtime, and the Pirates' men's basketball team outscored host LA Valley n the extra time to claim a 76-74 victory Tuesday night. Cordel Hankerson led Ventura (6-4) with 18 points and nine rebounds and isaih Reyes had 14 points off the bench in the victory. -
Ventura's Hot Start Leads to Win at Irvine Valley Classic
November 19, 2016The Pirates' men's basketball team got off to a hot start behind Cordel Hankerson and Trevor LaCount and made it hold up for the entire game in their 79-69 victory over Cuyamaca in the consolation championship of the Irvine Valley Classic Saturday afternoon. Hankerson finished with 21 points and four rebounds, earning all-tournament accolades, and LaCount came in with 17 points and five boards. -
Hot Shooting, Strong Bench Play Propel VC Past Long Beach
November 18, 2016The Pirates used a hot shooting touch and strong play off the bench to blow past Long Beach City College 85-67 Friday in the consolation semifinals of the Irvine Valley Classic. Isiah Reyes had a double-double of 18 points and 10 assists off the bench for Ventura (4-4) and Cordel Hankerson netted 15, including three 3-pointers, in the victory. -

Trevor LaCount and Isiah Reyes each scored 12 points to lead the Pirates. Cordel Hankerson netted 11 points in the effort while Vida Faniel had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. -
Pirates Top Comets in NorCal Finale
November 13, 2016The drive home Sunday was a little easier. The Ventura College men's basketball team closed the Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament in Fremont with a 82-59 win over the Contra Costa Comets Sunday afternoon. Trevor LaCount led VC (3-3) with 18 points while Vida Faniel and Cordel Hankerson each added 12. Thomas Frank was the fourth Pirate in double-figures with 11 points while Isiah Ryes had nine points in the game, all in the second half.
