Ventura College sophomore forward Vida Faniel was named the Western State Conference North Division Most Valuable Player for the 2017 season in voting by the conference coaches last weekend. VC head coach Joey Ramirez was named the WSC North Division Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Faniel was a walking double-double for the Pirates, posting double-figures in points and rebounds in six of the ten WSC games, with nine boards in another contest. He was the model of consistency shooting 56.5 percent from the floor, 55.6 percent from behind the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent at the free throw stripe in conference games. Faniel, a Kinght High School product from Palmdale, averaged 19.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, leading VC to its second straight conference title.
Pirate sophomores Cordel Hankerson and freshman Isiah Reyes also earned first team all-WSC honors. Sophomore Eddie Cowan was named honorable mention all conference.
