
For the second time in five games, the Pirates' men's basketball team topped the century mark with their 102-69 victory over Oxnard Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. Dayshone Henry led Ventura (14-7, 5-0) with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Shulton Tobin put up 20 points with five boards in the run-away win. Timothy Turner backed up the effort with 13 points and three dimes.Donavan Williams and Dayveon Bates totaled nine and eight points, respectively.
The Pirates jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the early going behind free throws from Donavan and Henry, a deuce from Tobin and Donavan's shot from range. Three's by Tone Patton and Tobin extended the lead to 14-2 with 14:25 remaining in the first half. Henry scored on three consecutive trips down the floor for a 20-7 margin halfway through the period, and Dayveon Bates' score at the 8:50 mark made it 27-10. Turner scored eight points in the final 1:26 of the first half to lead the Pirates to a 47-26 advantage at intermission.
Henry took over early in the second half as the Pirates left no doubt about the outcome. The sophomore scored 11 of Ventura's first 15 points of the period as the Pirates opened up a 62-36 lead with 15:20 remaining in the game. Tobin got it going down the stretch, scoring 15 of his points in the final 10 minutes of the game. His 3-pointer at the 2:36 mark pushed VC past the century mark, and his charity toss with 2:08 remaining gave the Pirates a 102-61 lead. Oxnard scored the final eight points of the game to set the final margin.
Thomas Dangerfield had six points and nine rebounds in the game and Patton totaled seven points, six boards and three dimes. Donavan added three steals to his nine points.
Ventura completes the first round of conference play on Wednesday Jan. 29 at Cuesta College. Tip-off in San Luis Obispo is slated for 7:00 pm. They travel to Santa Barbara on Saturday Feb. 1 before hosting Allan Hancock College on Wednesday Feb. 5.
