
The VC women's basketball team had a trio of players named to the All-Western State Conference North Division team in voting by the conference coaches following the regular season. Freshmen Alexa Coubal, Daphné LeBrun and Sam McKenzie all earned first team All-WSC honors for the Pirates.
Coubal, the former Notre Dame University track and field athlete who came back to VC to play basketball, had a record-setting year for Ventura as a freshman. The Thousand Oaks High school product led VC in scoring with 15.5 points per game in WSC play with a 9.7 rebound average. She shot 46 percent from the field and made a record 92 percent of her free throws during conference games. On the year she averaged a double-double of 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds while making a program single-season record of 177 free throws, making nearly 83 percent of her attempts, which places her second in the single-season and career-records.
LeBrun, who came to Ventura from Lille, France, was a solid point guard for the Pirates before an injury ended her season prematurely with three games remaining in the regular season. She handed out a team-best 4.2 assists per game in WSC games while providing the Pirates best defensive effort on the permitter with a 2.3 steals per game average. She also added nearly seven points per contest against WSC competition.
McKenzie, an Oxnard high School alumna, was second on the team with 12.5 points per game while shooting 42 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the foul line. She also provided 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game in 12 WSC appearances.
Ventura finished the season with a 9-3 WSC North record, tying for second place in the conference standings. On the year they were 20-11, posting the program's 33rd 20-win season in the past 34 seasons and moving to the 3C2A Sweet 16 for the 22nd time since 1990.
