
The VC men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Western State Conference Preliminaries Friday, with a number of athletes moving on to next week's WSC Championships. Additionally, Cole Everett won the conference high jump finals to advance to the Southern California Regionals. Brianna Torres claimed second in the 10000m final and Ashley Crist won silver in the long jump.
Everett (Nordhoff) cleared the bar at 6'2.75" and won the competition with fewer misses. Meanwhile, Torres (Oxnard) ran the 10k in 39:47.78 to post the 11th-fastest time in VC history for the silver medal. (She also posted the No. 5-ranked mark in program records a year ago.) A. Crist (Foothill Tech) leaped a lifetime-best 17'4.75" to place second in the long jump, the 11-best jump all-time at VC. Dante Mata-Burney (Santa Paula) placed eighth in the high jump for VC, earning the first-alternate position for the SoCal Prelims.
In preliminary events on the track, Max Daniel (Buena) qualified for the WSC championships by placing second in the 100m while Micah Contreras (Camarillo) and Caleb Marzette (Oxnard) were third and fifth, respectively. Camren Harris (Oxnard) was 10th and will be first alternate.
Chloe Williams (Buena) finished sixth in the 100m for VC and A. Crist was ninth. Leshelle Lee came in 10th as the first-alternate to the WSC finals and Kelsey Crist (Foothill Tech) was 11th and the second alternate.
Trevor McCarthy (St. Bonaventure) won the 200m prelims and Shaun Tolson (Oxnard) was sixth for the men while Williams was fourth for the Pirate women.
Tolson was second in the 400m and McCarthy was fourth, with both advancing to the conference championships next week.
In the 400m hurdles, Contreras finished third, Aaron Giron (Oxnard) came in seventh and Jacson Cutting (Camarillo) was eighth. Contreras and Cutting also advanced in the 110m hurdles as there were only nine entries in the event. Amia Cason (Oxnard) came in fifth in the 100m hurdles for the VC women.
The Pirates will net compete at the WSC Championships on Friday April 25 at Moorpark College.
