The VC men's and women's track and field teams each finished second of six competing teams Friday at the Western State Conference Coastal Meet at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. The Pirate men produced seven individual first place finishes on the day, including two each by Adrian Valdez and Adam Alfred. VC;s women had three of gold medal performances, including one each by Sophia Godina, Jamie Lozano and Saj Nelson.
Valdez (Oxnard) pulled off the double golds in the 800m and 1500m runs in 1:57.75 and 4:06.98, respectively. Alfred (Oxnard) won the shot put with a throw of 44' 5.25" and claimed gold in the discus with a mark of 129' 0".
Dante manta-Burney (Santa Paula) claimed first in the long jump with a leap of 21' 0.75" and Payton Hoff (Buena) won gold in the hammer with a throw of 127' 4". Meanwhile, Thomas Dore (Oxnard) ran first in the 100m, breaking the tape in 10.82, and teamed up with William Boyd (Buena), AJ Monarres (Ventura) and Isaiah Marecheau (Oxnard) to run a 41.84 in the 4x100 relay, also taking gold.
Marecheau was second in the 100m and claimed silver in the 200m while Boyd came in fourth in the 200m. Dore finished eighth in the 200m and Monarres was seventh in the 200m and third in the 400m. Jack Hawley (Ventura) broke the tape sixth in the 400m.
Valdez added a silver medal in the 3000m run while Josh Weinerth came in fourth in the 1500m and fifth in the 3000m. Erick Tienda (Rio Mesa) ran fourth in the 800m and fifth in the 1500m and Ramiro Mateos (Oxnard) was sixth in the 1500m and fifth in the 400m hurdles.
Mata-Burney added the bronze medal in the triple jump while Alfred claimed third in the hammer and fifth in the javelin. Hoff (Buena) added a third place finish in the discus and a fourth place mark in the shot put.
Godina (Rio Mesa) ran 2:26.80 in the 800m to win the gold, and she also claimed a pair of silvers in the 1500m and 3000m runs. Lozano had a gold medal throw of 33' 1.25" in the shot put and also won second in the discus and third in the hammer. Nelson (Pacifica) won the Pirates' third individual gold on the day posting a mark of 122' 7" in the discus. She also was third in the shot put.
Samantha McKenzie (Oxnard) won a pair of silvers in the 100m and 100m hurdles while Myah Hall (Rio Mesa) was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Denise Cardona (Pacifica) was second in the hammer and fourth in the discus and Brenda Garcia (Buena) was fourth in the 3000m and fifth in the 1500m.
The Pirate men totaled 156 points, finishing behind Moorpark with 171 and ahead of third place Cuesta at 79.
The Ventura women, meanwhile, scored 114 points, finishing behind West Los Angeles at 162 and narrowly edging out Moorpark at 112.
Ventura next competes at the Moorpark Open on Friday March 31.
