James Ennis '11 Signs in NBA
July 16, 2014Ventura College alumnus James Ennis ’11 has signed a contract with the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association. Ennis, who led the Pirates to the Western State Conference’s best record in his sophomore season at VC, becomes the third former Pirate to reach the ultimate level of professional basketball competition. -
Pirate Season Ends in Playoffs
March 01, 2014It was a great run while it lasted, but the Ventura College men's basketball season came to an end Saturday night with a pair of Mt. San Jacinto College runs in the first half of their CCCAA SoCal Regional Quarterfinal contest in Hemet. The No. 3-seeded Eagles put together a 15-2 run midway through the first half and closed the period on a 11-0 streak in the final three minutes to take complete control. Ivan Dooley scored a game-high 28 points in his final game in the orange and black while Jalen Young and Jon McMurry netted 11 and 10 points, respectively for No. 19 VC (17-12) in the loss. -
VC Upsets Defending Champs
February 26, 2014The Pirates' men's basketball team used a barrage of offense with four players in double figures to upset the defending state champion No. 14 Mt. San Antonio Mounties Wednesday night in their CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoff opener in Walnut, 82-69. Jon McMurry scored 22 points with six rebounds and five assists while Ivan Dooley netted 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Anthony Morman and Jalen Young each contributed 12 points as No. 19 VC (17-11) advances to the regional quarterfinals at No. 3 Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday March 1. -
Vetura Falls One Game Short
February 22, 2014After struggling at times in the early season, and after dropping their first Western State Conference game, the Pirates' men's basketball team put together an impressive run at repeating as conference champions, winning nine of 10 games. That run came to an end Saturday at Raider Pavilion as VC fell to rival Mooraprk 77-70, relegating Ventura to a second place finish in the WSC. -
Sophomores Lead VC to Win
February 19, 2014It was sophomore night at the Athletic Event Center Wednesday, as the Pirates were playing their final regular season contest of the 2013-14 season. And it was VC's sophomores, Ivan Dooley, Jon McMurry, Anthony Morman and Dennis Savoy who led the Pirates to a 69-64 win over College of the Canyons, preserving Ventura's chance to share the Western State Conference title for the second year in a row. Dooley netted 20 points and McMurry had 18 points with 10 rebounds for the Pirates (16-11, 9-2). -
Cagers Top Santa Barbara
February 15, 2014On barbeque night, the Pirates' men's basketball team led from the early going on in their 77-59 victory over Santa Barbara City College Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center. Jalen Young led three Pirates in double figures with 15 points and six assists while Vondel Faniel and Jon McMurry each posted double-doubles, Faniel with 14 points and 13 rebounds and McMurry recording 13 points and 10 boards respectively. Anthony Morman and Ivan Dooley each scored nine points for VC (15-11, 8-2). -
Pirates Hold Off LA Pierce
February 12, 2014Continuing to fight for the defense of the ir Western State Conference title, the Ventura College men's basketball team held off Los Angeles Pierce 81-74 Wednesday night in Woodland Hills. Jon McMurry had a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the effort while Jalen Young knocked in 22 points with a team-high six assists. With the victory, the Pirates (14-11, 7-2) keep pace a half game behind Cuesta (8-2) for the top spot in the conference. -
VC Keeps Pace With OT Win
February 08, 2014The Pirate men's basketball team kept pace in the Western State Conference race with a hard-fought 76-69 overtime victory at Allan Hancock College Saturday night. Ivan Dooley paced VC (13-11, 6-2) with 27 points and 11 rebounds while Vondel Faniel turned in a strong performance with his own double-double of 15 points and 11 boards. Jon McMurry and Jalen Young turned in 12 and 10 points respectively, as Ventura remained 1/2 game back of Cuesta for the top spot in the conference. -
Pirates Fall to First Place Tie
February 01, 2014For the second consecutive game the Pirate men's basketball team had trouble scoring down the stretch. Unfortunately the result was not the same Saturday as it had been Wednesday as VC dropped a 63-56 decision at home to Cuesta College, falling into a first-place tie with the Cougars with a 5-2 conference mark. Ivan Dooley scored 19 points to lead Ventura (12-11, 5-2) while Jalen Young and Jon McMurry each recorded 11 points. -
VC Tops Moorpark for 1st Place
January 29, 2014Despite not scoring a field goal in the final five minutes of the game, the Pirate men's basketball team hung on for a 57-56 heart-stopping victory over Moorpark College Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. VC made just enough free throws down the stretch and played solid defense in the final minute to hold off the Raiders and claim sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference North Division after one round of conference play. Ivan Dooley and Jon McMurry led the way with 17 points while Vondel Faniel posted a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds in the win for Ventura (12-10, 5-1). It was the fifth straight victory for the Pirates. -
Pirates Tame CoC for 4th Straight
January 25, 2014The Ventura College men's basketball team continued their resurgence Saturday night with a 60-51 taming of the Cougars from College of the Canyons at the Cougars' Cage in Valencia. Ivan Dooley led all scorers with 20 points, including five 3-pointers, and Jon McMurry had 17 points and five rebounds. Anthony Morman netted 11 points with a team-high seven boards and Jalen Young had five rebounds with eight assists. The win was the fourth straight for VC (11-10, 4-1), as they move into a first-place tie in the WSC North with Moorpark College, their next opponent. -
McMurry Leads Cagers to Win.
January 22, 2014Sophomore Jon McMurry had another strong outing with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Pirates to a 60-49 win at Santa Barbara City College Wednesday night. Vondel Faniel added 14 points and Jalen Young chipped in 11 as VC (10-10, 3-1) climbed back to the .500 mark with their third straight conference victory. VC also moved to within half of a game of first place Cuesta (4-1), who lost to Canyons (3-1) on Wednesday. VC, Moorpark (3-1), Cuesta and Canyons all are within one half game of first place -
VC Men Win Second Straight
January 18, 2014The VC men's basketball team used a quick start Saturday night to take control early, and hung on down the stretch in their 86-79 win over LA Pierce at the Athletic Event Center. Jalen Young and Jon McMurry each scored 20 points and Vondel Faniel and Anthony Morman posted 15 points with eight rebounds and 13 points with six boards, respectively as VC (9-10, 2-1) won its second straight conference game. -
Pirates Rout Allan Hancock
January 15, 2014The Pirate en's basketball team captured their first Western State Conference win of the year, and ended a three game losing streak in the process by routing Allan Hancock College 77-58 Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center. Ivan Dooley paced VC (8-10, 1-1) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Rodney Bryant scored 14 points with five assists while Jalen Young netted 11 with four dimes. Jon McMurry scored 13 points, including hitting three 3-pointers. -
Pirates Can't hold lead at Cuesta
January 08, 2014The Ventura College men's basketball team raced out to a 12-point lead halfway through their Western State Conference opener Wednesday night at Cuesta, but 18 second half turnovers allowed the Cougars back into the contest late, as the Pirates fell 78-70 in San Luis Obispo. Rodney Bryant came off the bench to lead VC (7-10, 0-1) with 17 points while Vondel Faniel and Jalen Young each netted 16. Ivan Dooley and Devin Smith each grabbed seven rebounds for the Pirates. -
Pirates Force OT, Fall to Citrus
January 04, 2014Playing from behind for the entire game, the Ventura College men's basketball team made a valiant comeback in the closing minutes, with Jalen Young driving the length of the court after a timeout with six seconds remaining to hit a layup and force overtime. In the extra period, VC (7-9) could not hold on to its early lead, eventually falling to the Owls 91-86 in their final non-conference action of the season. Young and Ivan Dooley each netted 20 points for Ventura and Vondel Faniel added 11 points to the effort. -
Comets Drop VC in COS Finale
December 22, 2013The Pirates' men's basketball team dropped the consolation final at the Pepsi-Holiday Inn Tournament at the College of the Sequoias to the Contra Costa Comets Sunday afternoon, 75-64 in Visalia. Ivan Dooley led the Pirate effort with 22 points while Jon McMurry had 10 points witha team-high six rebounds. Jalen Young dished out five assists for the Pirates (7-8). -

December 21, 2013The VC men's basketball team stayed alive in the Pepsi-Holiday Inn Tournament in Visalia with a 73-67 victory over the Porterville Pirates Saturday afternoon. Jon McMurry netted 19 points to lead Ventura (7-7) to the win while Rodney Bryant netted 11 points with eight rebounds. Ivan Dooley hit for 10 points with five assists and Najee Seabrooks came off the bench for 10 points, five boards, and five blocked shots. -
VC Comeback Falls Short
December 20, 2013A slow start for the Pirates' men's basketball team forced them into a comeback situation Friday afternoon i the first round of the Pepsi-Holiday Inn Tournament at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia. The pirates were down 33-22 at halftime against Cerritos before closing the gap in the second half, but VC never got over the hump in the 62-61 loss. Vondel Faniel led Ventura (6-7) with 14 points while Jon McMurry and Jalen young netted 12 and 11 points, respectively. -
VC Men Take Third at AVC
December 08, 2013The Ventura College men’s basketball team took third place at the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College with a 100-76 victory over Los Angeles Pierce College Sunday. Freshman Rodney Bryant led six players in double-figures with 22 points while Vondel Faniel netted 20. Ivan Dooley had 18 points with Jalen Young, Jon McMurry and Ramon Franklin each scoring 10 points. McMurry also pulled in a team-high nine rebounds with seven assists for VC (6-6). -
Cagers Dropped by Canyons
December 07, 2013After taking a quick 8-1 lead, the Pirates' men's basketball team were the victims of a 25-2 run at the hands of the College of the Canyons Cougars as they eventually fell 88-65 in the semifinals of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College Saturday night. Ivan Dooley had 22 points and Jalen Young netted 14 for the Pirates (5-6). Meanwhile, Ramon Franklin came off the bench to score 10 points in the loss. -
MBB Pounds Barstow 101-69
December 06, 2013In the opening round of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament, the Pirates' men's basketball team put together a solid effort in defeating Barstow 101-69 at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster Friday evening. Rodney Bryant netted a season-high 21 points to lead VC (5-5), including hitting five 3-pointers while Jon McMurry was on fire, hitting six of seven triples for 18 points. Jalen Young netted 12 points with seven assists and Vondel Faniel also tallied a dozen points with 11 rebounds. -
Slow Start Dooms Pirates
December 01, 2013The Pirates' men's basketball team got off to a slow start Sunday and they never recovered, dropping an 87-75 decision to East Los Angeles on the final day of the John J. Kennedy Tournament at Pasadena City College. VC (4-5) fell behind 13-2 in the first five minutes of the contest and did not get much closer the rest of the way in the loss. Ivan Dooley scored 26 points to lead the way for the Pirates while Jalen Young and Anthony Morman netted 17 and 13 points, respectively. Dennis Savoy pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds. -
MBB Falls at PCC Tourney
November 30, 2013Freshman guard Jalen Young poured in 25 points, but the VC men's basketball team dropped an 81-70 decision to San Bernardino Valley College on the second day of the John J. Kennedy Tournament at Pasadena City College Saturday. Jon McMurry was the only other Pirate in double-figures with 14 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Dennis Savoy came off the bench to score six points with six boards for the Pirates (4-4). -
Pirates Break Skid vs. Barstow
November 29, 2013The VC men's basketball team used a 16-3 run midway through the first half to take control of their 87-66 victory over Barstow College at the John J. Kennedy Classic at Pasadena City College Friday afternoon. Jon McMurry led five Pirates in double-figures with 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the victory. Vondel Faniel, Ivan Dooley, Jalen Young, and Martel Tyler all netted 14 points each in the effort. Dennis Savoy pulled in seven boards for VC (4-3) as they ended a brief two-game losing streak. -
VC Drops Close Contest at IVC
November 22, 2013Falling for the second time in as many days, the VC men's basketball team was eliminated from the Irvine Valley Tournament Friday with a narrow 67-66 loss to Imperial Valley. Jon McMurry netted 17 points to lead Ventura (3-3) while Ivan Dooley and Jalen Young scored 16 points each. Dennis Savoy came off the bench to lead the Pirates with seven boards. -
MBB Struggles at Irvine
November 21, 2013Nothing went right Thursday night for the Pirates' men's basketball team as they dropped their first game in the Irvine Valley Tournament to Long Beach City 88-73. Ventura (3-2) shot a season worst 36 percent from the field (24-65), and 12 percent from behind the arc (3-25). VC also gave up 47 rebounds to the Vikings, including 20 offensive boards. Forward Anthony Morman scored 20 points on 6-8 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds while guard Ivan Dooley added 11 points and five boards. Guard Jalen Young netted 17 points, as well. -
Pirates Take First Road Test
November 13, 2013Traveling for their first road test of the season, the Pirates’ men’s basketball team passed with an 80-74 victory at Los Angeles Valley College Wednesday night in Valley Glen. Vondel Faniel led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Anthony Morman also netted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Ivan Dooley and Jon McMurry added 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Ventura (3-1) while Martel Tyler was the fifth Pirate in double-figures with 10 points and five assists. -
VC Rebounds to Take Third
November 09, 2013A strong shooting performance against pressure defense helped propel the Ventura College men's basketball team to a 72-63 win over Orange Coast College Saturday afternoon in the third place game of the We Play Hard Tip-Off Tournament at the Athletic Event Center. Jon McMurry led VC with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, to earn All-Tournament honors in the win. Vondel Faniel came off the bench to net 12 points with a team-high nine rebounds for the Pirates (2-1). -

November 08, 2013Committing 30 turnovers in the game, the Ventura College men’s basketball team was on the short end of a 20-6 run over the final nine minutes of the game, falling 69-53 to Pasadena City College Friday in the semifinals of the We Play Hard Tip-Off Tournament. Jon McMurry led VC with 15 poins and seven rebounds while Vondel Faniel and Jalen Young each added 10 points. Faniel lead all Pirates with eight boards.
