VC Athletics 13th in California in NATYCAA CupAugust 12, 2024The Ventura College Athletic Department claimed its 14th Top-13 finish in 19 years, placing 13th in California in the 2023-24 all-sports National Association of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup standings. Pirate Athletics totaled 106 points overall, besting its 105.5 points earned in 2022-23 that placed 12th. Ventura was also 17th for the second straight year in the Daktronics Cup Standings with two-years schools from California, Oregon and Washington.

VC Lists 70 transfers to 4-Year SchoolsAugust 01, 2024The Ventura College Athletic Department is proud to announce the transfer of 71 student athletes to four-year schools following their time with the Pirates. 48 of those transfers plan to continue their sport with 34 earning athletic scholarships. The VC class of 2024 will transfer to 48 different schools in 19 different states across the country. Additionally, 17 of the Pirate alumni have earned academic scholarships at their new schools.

Men's Tennis Champions on the Court and in the ClassroomJuly 30, 2024The 3C2A State Champion VC men's tennis team added to their banner year by earning All-Academic Team honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association last week. The Pirates were one of 14 JUCO men's tennis teams from around the country recognized by the ITA for academic excellence, three of which are from California. Additionally, Ventura had seven student athletes awarded Scholar Athlete awards for outstanding individual accomplishment in the classroom.

Emery, Matias & Abreu Earn ITA All-American AwardsMay 06, 2024Cody Ray Emery, Rafael Matias and Lucas Abreu all earned 3C2A All-American Awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their play during the 2024 season. Emery was also named the ITA Juco West Region Sophomore Player of the Year. Emery and Abreau, along with Matias and Julian Tellez were named ITA 3C2A All-Americans in doubles.

Pirates Dominate Men's Tennis All-WSC AwardsMay 03, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team was featured in the All-Western State Conference awards for the 2024 season, with all six singles players earning first team honors and all three doubles teams being named second team all-conference. Cody Ray Emery led the award winners for VC as the Co-Player of the Year award leading the Pirates to their 20th WSC crown in the past 26 years.

Matias & Tellez Finish in Final Four; Pirates Claim Gorham CupApril 28, 2024VC's doubles pair of Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez finished the 2024 season Sunday in the 3C2A State Doubles Final Four at The Ojai Tournament. The Pirates' men's tennis team, meanwhile, was awarded the Gorham Cup for the overall California Community College team champion during the four day of singles and doubles play to close the season.

Emery, Matias and Tellez Advance to Semi's at OjaiApril 27, 2024VC's No. 1 singles player Cody Ray Emery advanced to the semifinal round of the 3C2A State Championships before bowing out Saturday while the Pirates No. 2 doubles pair of Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez qualified for Sunday's state doubles semifinals at The Ojai Tournament.

Pirates Claim One-Fourth of Ojai QuarterfinalsApril 26, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team advanced two singles players and two doubles teams into the quarterfinal round of the 3C2A State Tournament at The Ojai on Friday. Cody Ray Emery and Robinson Pelluault will face off in a Round of 8 match Saturday morning while the doubles pairs of Emery and Lucas Abreu along with Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez will play quarterfinal matches on Saturday afternoon.

Men's Tennis Perfect on Day 1 of The OjaiApril 25, 2024A day after capturing the state team title, the VC men's tennis team was back at it on the opening day of the 3C2A State Singles and Doubles Championships at The Ojai Tournament. Five VC singles players and three doubles teams were perfect on the day with all moving forward to day two of the draw, including Robinson Pelluault, who came from behind to win his Round of 64 match at Rio Mesa High School.

Ventura Sweeps American River for 3rd State TitleApril 24, 2024On a picture-perfect day for tennis, the Ventura College men’s tennis team had a picture-perfect ending to their 2024 season with a 5-0 sweep over American River College from Sacramento in the 3C2A State Championship at the VC Tennis Center. Julian Tellez clinched the winner for the Pirates (18-6) in No. 4 singles after Rafael Matias had recorded a love and love win in the No. 2 slot. The title is the third for VC under longtime head coach Nelson Emery, their first since 2010.

Ventura Advances to State Championship with SoCal TitleApril 20, 2024Lucas Abreu had a pretty good day Saturday. After teaming up with Cody Ray Emery to win at No. 1 doubles for the Pirates men's tennis team against Glendale in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Final, the VC sophomore clinched the match against the Vaqueros with a come-from-behind win in singles to propel Ventura to the state championship match on Wednesday April 24. Edgar Ploquin also produced a pair of victories as the Pirates advanced to the state final for the first time since 2013.

Pirate Tennis Advances to SoCal Finals, State Final FourApril 16, 2024The VC men's tennis team avenged their only regular season loss to a community college team since 2019 and advanced to the State Final Four with a resounding 5-1 triumph over Riverside in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Semifinals Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirate avenged a 5-4 defeat to the Tigers on March 1 behind a 3-0 sweep in doubles and wins by Julian Tellez and Edgar Ploquin in singles play.

Men's Tennis Sweeps Through SoCal QuarterfinalsApril 09, 2024The VC men's tennis team opened the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs Tuesday with a sweeping 5-0 win over Mt. San Antonio. The No. 2-seeded Pirates claimed all three doubles matches before Edgar Ploquin and Leo Pham-Kobayashi won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to clinch the victory.

Emary and Abreu Capture WSC Doubles CrownApril 06, 2024VC's Cody Ray Emery and Lucas Abreau won the Western State Conference men's doubles title on the final day of the WSC Championships Saturday at the VC Tennis Center. Additionally, Robinson Pelluault and Edgar Ploquin qualified for the 3C2A State Championships through the doubles back draw and Abreau punched his ticket to The Ojai in singles play.

Pirates Men Continue Success at WSC ChampionshipsApril 05, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team continued its string of success Friday on the third day of the Western State Conference Championships at the VC Tennis Center. Cody Ray Emery moved into Saturday's singles final and also advanced with Lucas Abreau to the doubles semifinals. Meanwhile, Robinson Pelluault qualified for the 3C2A State Championships in the singles back draw.

Men's Tennis Completes Undefeated WSC CampaignMarch 28, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team defeated Bakersfield 8-1 Thursday at the Pierpont Racquet Club to complete their 2024 Western State Conference slate with a perfect 8-0 record.

Pirate Tennis Retains Pfister Cup at North/South ChallengeMarch 23, 2024The VC men's tennis team posted two victories on Saturday in Bakersfield to retain the Pfister Cup at the North South Challenge. The Pirates defeated Fresno 7-1 in the morning match before shutting out Chabot 7-0 in the afternoon affair. Julian Tellez and Edgar Ploquin captured two doubles wins together and also each won twice in singles in the two matches for Ventura (13-6, 5-0).

Men's tennis Defeats Foothill at North/South ChallengeMarch 22, 2024The VC men's tennis team defeated a short-handed Foothill College team 9-0 Friday on the opening day of the Pfister Cup North/South Challenge in Bakersfield. The Pirates were able to spread the wealth against the Owls with eight different players recording victories, including the doubles team of Cooper Rowlands and Tiebe Verschaeve.

20 Years of Titles, Men's Tennis Clinches WSC CrownMarch 20, 2024The VC men's tennis team defeated Santa Barbara 7-2 on Tuesday clinching the program's 20th Western State Conference title in 26 competitive seasons under head coach Nelson Emery. Leo Pham-Kobayashi and Lucas Abreau each totaled two wins for VC, first in No. 2 doubles, then in the Nos. 2 and 6 singles, respectively, for the Pirates (10-6, 5-0).

Ventura Blanks Orange Coast, 9-0March 15, 2024The VC men's tennis team swept past visiting Orange Coast 9-0 Friday at the VC Tennis Center. After close doubles matches, the Pirates swept six singles contests by a combined score of 72-20. Cody Ray Emery captured his No. 1 match love and one while Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez each prevailed one and one.

VC Defeats Glendale to Take Control of WSCMarch 13, 2024In a Western State Conference showdown, the VC men's tennis team defeated Glendale 6-3 Wednesday after play was suspended Thursday March 7 due to weather. Edgar Ploquin was a double winner with victories in No. 3 doubles with Julian Tellez and in No. 6 singles. Tellez also added a point when play resumed claiming the No. 4 singles contest. Cody Ray Emery won his No. 1 singles match.

VC Tennis Has Difficult Weekend Against 4-Year SchoolsMarch 10, 2024The Pirates' men's tennis team played up again over the weekend, falling to Occidental College on Saturday before dropping a decision to NCAA Division III No. 4-ranked Case Western Reserve on Sunday. Cody Ray Emery provided two points for Ventura, defeating Occidental in doubles with Rafael Matias and winning his singles match on Saturday against the Tigers.

Pirate Tennis Falls to RiversideMarch 01, 2024For the first time in nearly five years, the Pirates' men;s tennis team dropped a regular-season match against community college competition on Friday. VC fell at Riverside 5-4 in the tightly contested match with the Tigers. VC sophomore Julian Tellez won a pair of points with a win in the No. 3 doubles match with partner Edgar Ploquin and a win in the No. 3 singles contest.

Ventura Opens WSC Play With SweepFebruary 23, 2024The VC men's tennis team opened Western State Conference play Friday with a 9-0 sweep over Santa Barbara at the VC Tennis Center. Sophomore Robinson Pelluault was one of five players who moved up one slot in singles and still provided points in the triumph. The Pirates (5-3, 1-0) did not drop a set in singles play in defeating the Vaqueros.

Men's Tennis Battles NCAA Div. I HawaiiFebruary 21, 2024The VC men's tennis team took a big step up on Wednesday hosting the University of Hawaii at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirates fell to the Warriors 7-0 but were very competitive against the NCAA Division I program. Rafael Matias and Cody Ray Emery both went to three sets in their singles matches before falling.

Pirates Drop Just 10 Games in Runaway WinFebruary 16, 2024The VC men's tennis team was nearly flawless Friday afternoon, dropping a combined 10 games in singles and doubles play in their 9-0 sweep of Saddleback at the VC Tennis Center. Rafael Matias did not lose a game in No. 2 doubles with Julian Tellez and in No. 2 singles while Lucas Abreau played a shutout with Cody Ray Emery in No. 1 doubles and dropped one game in his No. 3 singles match. Robinson Pelluault was perfect in No. 5 singles.

Men's Tennis Battles 4-Year Schools on Two-Day SwingFebruary 12, 2024The VC men's tennis team went on the road Monday and Tuesday to battle a pair of four-year schools. The Pirates battled but fell short against Menlo College 6-1 before dropping a contest at Fresno Pacific, 7-0. Cody Ray Emery won his No. 1 singles match against Menlo on Monday while Lucas Abreau and Thomas Lindner won at No. 2 doubles at FPU. Rafael Matias and Abreau both went the distance in their singles matches on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
