Pirate freshman Hironori Koyanagi continued his march through the CCCAA State Singles Championships at The Ojai Tournament Saturday, winning two more straight-set decisions to advance to the state singles finals on Sunday. Meanwhile, he also teamed up with doubles partner Corey Karen to move to the state semifinals.
Koyanagi, the top-seed in the draw, defeated his opponent, the No. 6-seed from Irvine Valley, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfianl match, before he beat the No. 5-seed, also from Irvine Valley, by an identical 6-2, 6-0 score. His two wins move him to the championship match Sunday April 26 at 12:30 pm at Libbey Park in Ojai against the No. 5 seed Corentin Haener from San Diego Mesa.
Corey Karen also played in the singles quarterfinals Saturday, falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to Haener.
In doubles, Koyanagi and Karen teamed up to advance to the state semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over a team from state runner-up Foothill College. The Pirate duo, the draw's No. 1-seed, will play at 8:00 am on Sunday in the semifinals against the No. 8-seed from state champion Irvine Valley. A win would put the pair in the state championship match at 3:30 pm in Ojai's Libbey Park.
