After a one season hiatus, the Pirates' men's tennis team has returned to the top of the Western State Conference following their 7-2 win at Glendale Tuesday. VC is two matches ahead of the Vauqeros in the loss column with two matches remaining for VC. They also defeated Glendale twice this season for the potential tiebreaker.
The Pirates (7-3, 4-0) were dominant in the singles matches, sweeping Glendale to clinch the match and the title. Corey Karen (No. 2) dropped just two games in his love, two victory while Hironori Koyanagi (No. 1) and Leonardo Santos (No. 4) both prevailed two and two. Victor Ribeiro (No. 5) won 6-2, 6-4 and Guenter Newman (No. 3) came out on top 6-3, 6-4. Florent Auteuil (No. 6) had to work a little harder in his 7-5, 6-1 win. In doubles, Santos and Ribeiro won their No. 3 match, 8-4 for the final point for the Pirates.
Ventura, who has now won nine of the last 10 and 12 of the last 15 WSC championships, will return home to face Los Angeles Pierce College on Thursday March 19 at 2:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.
