VC men's basketball standouts Anthony Garza and Adrian McIntyre have been named first team All-State by the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association for the 2022-23 season. Both sophomores, Garza, the 2023 Western State Conference Player of the Year, garners his first All-State award while McIntyre earns his second All-State nod for the Pirates.
Garza, a product of Shadow Ridge High School in Surprise, Ariz., Averaged 12.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game for the Pirates in 2022-23, playing in and starting 29 of VC's 30 games. He reached double-figures in points 17 times and posted four double-doubles during the year, scoring a season-best 26 points with 11 rebounds Jan. 7 against Cuesta. He pulled in a season-high 14 boards at 66.7 percent of his field goal attempts and added 2.7 assists and 1.1 blocks per game.
McIntyre, meanwhile, battled through injuries to earn his second straight All-State honor. The Saugus High School grad missed five games during the conference season, but still led the Pirates with 18.7 points per game, shooting a combined 55.7/35.6/79.5 (FG/3FG/FT). He scored in double figures 24 or 25 games, passing the 20-point mark 12 times. He also added 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals per outing.
Garza and McIntyre led Ventura to a 23-7 overall record, 10-2 in WSCN play, claiming the program's seventh straight conference title. They are VC's seventh and eighth CCCMBCA All-State players in the 11-season tenure of Pirate head coach Joey Ramirez. VC advanced to the Southern California Regional Finals, dropping a difficult overtime decision at Citrus College.
