Freshman point guard Aubri Smith was named the 2015 Western State Conference North Division Most Valuable Player while head coach Ned Mircetic was named Coach of the Year in voting by the conference coaches Sunday. Makenna Murray, Micaela Pericone-Kapp, Carolyn Ruffino and Brooke Zamora also earned first-team All-WSC honors.
Smith, a Buena High School product, becomes the 20th Pirate player to win the award since 1984. She led the league with 8.4 assists per game in conference action, while averaging 11.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals per contest.
This is the 11th Coach of the Year award for Mircetic in his 25-year tenure. This season he directed a team with no returning starters and three freshmen in the starting line-up to the Pirates' 25th straight WSC title. This year marks the 19th undefeated WSC campaign in Mircetic's career.
Murray, Pericone-Kapp, Ruffino, and Zamora all earned first-team All-WSC honors. They, along with their teammates, just completed a 25-5 regular season with a perfect 12-0 conference mark. They now await their playoff seeding, which will be released on Monday afternoon.
